Read this on the Military.com's website. It's an interesting question.

Women will eventually have to register for the draft if "true and pure equality" is to be realized in the U.S. military, Army Secretary John McHugh said Monday.

"If your objective is true and pure equality then you have to look at all aspects" of the roles of women in the military, McHugh said, and registration for the draft "will be one of those things. That will have to be considered."

Yes. Everyone should have to, that being said, the military needs to accept people who's abilities may not be suited for combat as well. My cousin was turned away due to a medical condition that hasn't bothered him since he was 7 years old. He could have been very useful in administrative duties and free up someone who is being wasted in data entry.

RedMulch --- 9 years ago -

what draft? did I miss something? are we not still all volunteer? I could have missed something cause I haven't watched the news in years...I have only read KU.

ClassOf68 --- 9 years ago -

It's still a requirement (for males) to register for the draft when they turn 18.

Should Women Have To Register For The Draft?

Yes

Zapper009 --- 9 years ago -

Treat same as males...that's what they demand!!!

a889324uu --- 9 years ago -

I don't support the draft, but yes, if men have to register, so should women.

I prefer people there that WANT to be there.

This is true. My 70 year old brother has Aspergers. Of course, this wasn't something they even diagnosed back when he was drafted during the height of the Vietnam war.

He probably wasn't suited emotionally for combat duty but fortunately he wasn't sent to Nam. The military recognized his very high IQ and because he was basically a computer genius they kept him stateside where he worked on some high level computer projects.

Not everyone's value is in being able to pass a physical or even other assessments. There are lots of ways people can contribute and be an asset to their country through service.

And, yes, women should be registering just like men have to.

SagaciousSighFiGurl (Mod) --- 9 years ago -

The problem with this is that women who want to be in the military will have to be on board to make it "equal". But physically they aren't in many situations so what you have is equality but with a sacrificing of quality.

PokerFace --- 9 years ago -

I don't see a problem, except that in a 2 parent household, someone has to stay home and raise the kids.

a889324uu --- 9 years ago -

Being in the military doesn't mean everyone will be in combat, so it's not always necessary for women to be physically equal to men outside of PT.

There are far many more rates and MOS than "grunt."

a889324uu --- 9 years ago -

Lots of successful dual military w/children households.

You make it work.

Red Heifer --- 9 years ago -

of course. I'm also in favor of two years of mandatory public service, whether we have a draft the time or not.

No, Most women are not cut out for the military.

^^^This is true^^^

I feel sorry for the men who would have to pick up the slack for the women. Also, the men have a natural urge to protect females. I think they would be distracted trying to protect the women.

a889324uu --- 9 years ago -

^ oh, give me a break. You DO realize that women have been serving in the military for a very long time, and are just as capable as men. You acting as if they are some sort of damsel in distress is incredibly insulting.

As a female veteran, I assure you, men don't pick up the slack for their sisters any more than we pick up their slack. Nor are they "distracted" trying to protect us.

Our military is comprised of some of the best this country has to offer, and their anatomy is irrelevant.

No, Most women are not cut out for the military.

You might be a weak woman, but you don't represent most women.

SoupIsGoodFood --- 9 years ago -

I don't think it's been referred to as registering for the "draft" for well over 30 years now.

It's called registering for "Selective Service". (I know. Just fancy words for "draft")

itstxdaddy --- 9 years ago -

Everyone is a soldier no matter what MOS or "job" you signed up for.

If you are not fit to pick up your weapon and fight, you are not fit to be in the military...period.

Your experience doesn't make fact just like mine doesn't. My experience was about 1 in 10 women were worth a damn and could pull their own weight. You may have been exceptional, and in fact, I am sure you will let me know how fantastic you were...but that's not everyone's experience with women in the military.

You are correct, it's now called the Selective Service and not the draft. As you said, though, it's the same thing.

You're thinking infantry. That's not the entirety of the military, not close. Of course, not everyone is cut out for every military job. For example, the women can fill the jobs that take brains and not upper body strength.

itstxdaddy --- 9 years ago -

To answer the question....yes they should have to register for Selective Service.

itstxdaddy --- 9 years ago -

Uh, no I'm not. I wasn't in infantry. I was in one of the other MOS's which accepted women back in the 90's. Thanks for trying though.

"I have brains, not upper body strength....DON'T SHOOT"...lol.

Red Heifer --- 9 years ago -

I'll stand by my comment. Women obviously can't do a few of the required jobs, but that doesn't disqualify them from all military service--isn't that obvious?

itstxdaddy --- 9 years ago -

You can stand by your comment and be wrong all day long. I wasn't in infantry and my experience was exactly as I wrote it. Never said they should be disqualified. What was your MOS?

AMDG --- 9 years ago -

it's the same thing.

Well except for that having to serve thing.

I didn't work with many female sailors until my final job, which I was only in for a year. And I didn't get a very good cross section, a few junior officers and mostly lower rate enlisted. I remember a great deal of emphasis on preventing fraternization, but I think that was more a factor of the integration being new. I don't have any outstanding memory of any real issues though.

Some were good, some were outstanding, some were bad, most were average. Just like men.

a889324uu --- 9 years ago -

Some of the weakest, laziest, dumbest members of the military are men.

a889324uu --- 9 years ago -

Itstxdaddy, Tomahawk cruise missles can't be picked up and no, we aren't all soldiers.

Some of us were too smart for the Army.

SagaciousSighFiGurl (Mod) --- 9 years ago -

As a female veteran

Oh my gosh!! You're a vet too? You just might be my hero!!

Bunk...

a889324uu --- 9 years ago -

Bunk...

Sounds like daddy got his arse handed to him on more than one occasion by a woman in the military, hence his aggressive stance towards them now.
