I know many people have opinions regarding which of the three Kingwood middle schools are "best" (KMS, RMS, or CMS), but I have a very specific and different question. Are there any course offering differences or curriculum based differences between the 3 middle schools? (I've already researched the test score differences, for what they are worth). From what I can find, RMS and CMS both offer French and I don't think KMS does. Are there any others?

OhBrother --- 8 years ago -

Best in what way? Acceptance, academics, social justice, athletics, diversity, rigidity, school culture, bragging rights, brand, etc.

SwimMomof2 --- 8 years ago -

There are too many subjective opinions associated with the word best, which is why I'm asking only about course and curriculum differences.

DVaz --- 8 years ago -

I don't think it really makes much difference anymore. I went to KMS and my brother went to CMS. Back twenty years ago Riverwood was for the rich snobs and KMS and CMS had the better athletes, but a more diverse wealth range. Now, KMS is more "ethnic" & economically diverse with a bunch of Section 8 families. You also should consider the future when it comes to KHS vs KPark.

you really can't pick your middle school. your child attends the one your street is designated to attend. you can check that on the humble isd website.

Dorothy Parker --- 8 years ago -

There is no school of choice for middle or high school, you go to where your address is zoned. If there is some sort of special circumstance that merits a transfer, you can apply, but, preferring one school over another isn't a valid reason. If you're looking for a new home, make sure you buy where your preferred school is zoned.

KMS is zoned to KPark and the other two are zoned to KHS.

Apparently no on wants to answer the question I asked. Instead everyone wants to wrongly assume my motivation and answer a different question. I have NO interest in which school people think is subjectively better. My question was are there any course offerings or curriculum differences between the schools. For example, it seems like CMS and RMS both offer French, but KMS does not.

Actually, you can. All you need is approval to attend a different school. Complain about bullying and the school district has to legally accommodate you.

Instead of whining about not getting your desired answer here's an idea: Get up and go ask each school about its particular curriculum. Maybe don't be so lazy and dependent on others....

Creekwood Middle is the best - my 8th grader was in 6th grade at Kms and my 6th grader was in elementary school at willow creek which feeds into riverwood. By far I love the culture at CMS they have a fantastic principal and great academics. CMS to me is more Middle of the road - not quite the snobbish element you might find at Riverwood and not the riff raff at KMS. I'm zoned to KMS and got my kids into CMS. the staff at CMS are very happy there and that translates into happy kids. Even my younger son who is special needs is loved by the kids there and treated with respect!

Riverwoods foreign language department has changed about 3 years so I can't give you a good perspective. If it was the same I would say to not worry about taking Spanish 1 at RW. I have seen great students once they get to high school become not so great students and the not so great completely excel. Alegebra 1 classes taken at RW was not the problem after matriculating to KHS. Band at RW is excellent. My best suggestion is successful HS course planning and not overloading. I haven't seen any top 25% not get into college...some with a full ride.

ShookUpRamen --- 8 years ago -

Spanish Immersion is at Creekwood. Creekwood does not have ESL. KMS does.

Wow...that was pretty rude, SwimMom2. All the middle schools are equal. All the schools in Kingwood are good...the be st schools in Humble ISD. My kids attended CMS, great academics and excellent music programs. Love both the band and the orchestra instructors. Their art program was also top notch.

There's your answer.

Dvaz, if you noticed I wrote that a transfer is possible with a valid reason. Bullying might be one of them. However, I wouldn't lie about it just to get a transfer because I thought one school was better than another. That's why it's important to research the schools ahead of time and buy your home accordingly.

Karras --- 8 years ago -

Both are kids went to CMS (We didn't) have a choice in the matter, and it seems to be a very school.

I don't believe one school has different programs/curriculum over the other.

All I want out of middles school, and expect, is a good RELA, History and Math teachers to help build the foundation for success in high school.

Riverwood and Creekwood both offer French on their campuses. Look at RMS's website under Fine Arts/Electives. I also believe that both campuses are allowed to have students transfer to the high school first period to take German.
CMS does have ESL classes and an ESL program as well. I am assuming that RMS does also. If you have one student on your campus that qualifies for ESL services then you must offer a program and support services by federal law. Now I am not saying that there is a large enrollment but there are those programs.

Speaking from a perspective of KMS parent whose child is now a freshman, the administration is wonderful in terms of how they handle the kids. Academically, however, the kids have virtually no homework and very few textbooks (we were told they were too old to use).I was told by a K Park counselor that the KMS kids struggled with homework because they were not used to it. I think the administration at Creekwood is excellent also.

The transition from middle school to high school is difficult for even the most well prepared students. Unfortunately, all students are not equally prepared in middle school which makes the transition more difficult. If your middle school student is not reading, studying, working on increasingly more difficult assignments at home something is wrong. If they are not becoming more personally accountable for their school work something is wrong. If my child attended a school where books were not issued to the student I'd really be questioning that! They're missing out on gaining the skills needed to make a smooth transition to high school.

One more thing...... a5341266uu calling children "rift raff" is uncalled for and not necessary. That statement made your opinion basically invalid. Shame on you!

Karras --- 8 years ago -

Unfortunately, most schools (middle and high) are not issuing text books. If they do, the students have to leave them in class. However, the textbooks are online.

pynkett --- 8 years ago -

My son went to Riverwood. There is not a huge difference between curriculums in all the school since they are all in the same district. My son did go to KMS his freshman year and seen alot of bullying. He liked RMS better. He is shy and quiet. I do not know anything about CMS.
He is now a Freshman at KHS.

ShookUpRamen --- 8 years ago -

CMS does have ESL classes and an ESL program as well.

CMS would not enroll my son. I have 2 other children there. They made him go to KMS for ESL instruction.

Dentalgal --- 8 years ago -

I know that CMS started offering German this year though KHS. It is the first class of the day at KHS you drop your child off at KHS then they bus them back to CMS. I be they offer it at RMS too since they both go to KHS.

Ignore fuzzball...he's on a rant on every thread. He is a sore loser.

The best suggestion was to do it yourself and that will give you a feel for each school.

scooby --- 8 years ago -

CMS does have an ESL program. I work there and have ESL kids in my classes that are in the ESL program. CMS is a great school with a lot of great classes to choose from. There are different languages, STEM, business types classes and much more to choose from.
