Ok, I really like animals and trees and birds too. And even tho squirrels are animals, I'm going to go as far as saying they are a literal nuisance! Those suckers have not only eaten all the bird food off the feeders but they chew the feeders into pieces. There have been like 4 now. Ugh. All chewed up and left on the ground. If I had a BB gun, they'd be on the ground instead, LOL. So, me being stubborn as I am about giving up, I decide to step up my game. ?? I buy one of those plain poles with a hook on top. Buy a new feeder, load it up with food and put it next to nothing, nothing to climb on, no clinging branches, nada. A bare pole, hook and the feeder. I look out my kitchen window and what do I see? A pair of squirrels sitting in the feeder feasting. Grrrrrr. So I scream at them and pound on the window. They scurry off, I retreat to my office to recoup and strategize, lol. Then I decide, no more new equipment, feeders or poles. I'm going to use what I have and WIN. LOL! Hell hath no fury like a homeowner scorned!! ? ?????????? I then decide, I gotta stop him at the ground level, no take off, no height, no height, no FOOD. ???? So I get some Crisco shortening and slather that pole with grease. Sounds gross, was slippery, can confirm. I just looked out the window to see that jerk squirrel not making up the pole!!! Best thing ever!!! Hahaaa

I feel your pain. DH greased ours with pure silicone. It worked for about a day. Now they jump from the fence to the top hook and slide down to the bird feeder level and chow down. They manage to hang on with their back feet and grab the food while sliding to the ground. At least it's entertaining. 

We just finally gave up on feeding birds. The squirrels would literally fly from someplace to get to the feeder, the squirrel-proof feeder, btw. ha! In fact, we had an increase in squirrels when we had the bird, I mean, squirrel feeders out. 

I saw the "squirrel proof" feeder! It was like $40 so I passed, glad I did now!

The worsts part is pulling up the squirrel-tossed seeds that start growing underneath the feeders! You will find wild grasses and all kinds of plants growing. 

Put powdered red pepper in the bird seed. Birds have no taste buds. Squirrels do.
