Has anyone seen the movie yet? Is it 100% singing or is there dialogue too?

kidsfan3 --- 12 years ago -

I haven't seen it yet. It's one of those that hubby doesn't care to see so I guess I'll be going with a friend. :) I've heard nothing but good reviews from friends on Facebook that have seen it. Sorry I don't know the answer to your second question.

We saw Parental Guidance last night. Cute movie!

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 12 years ago -

I can't wait!!!!!!!! My favorite of all time!!!!

freebyrdII --- 12 years ago -

I dare either of you to give a synopsis of the story line... even after seeing it..... No no.... No google.....

esquala --- 12 years ago -

I just can't get past Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe singing; and to each other to boot.

Work in Progress --- 12 years ago -

Was it the exact same as the musical? I LOVE Les Mis the musical. It ruined all of the others for me because nothing else compares.

freebyrdII --- 12 years ago -

I dare you to do the same WIP!!!

Work in Progress --- 12 years ago -

Of the musical? I last saw it in 2000, so I probably wouldn't be able to give a good synopsis. But it was about the French Revolution. I was able to follow the story line then. It did involve lots of characters over an extended amount of time.

But it was incredible! I saw Phantom and Cats and a few others after that, and they were just "meh" after the amazingness that was Les Mis! That's why I want to know if the movie IS the musical version. The book was depressing and I don't want to see the movie if it is based off of that. But the musical was uplifiting and incredible.

Ok.... So you like a good musical!!!!!!

Synopsis:

When Victor Hugo’s novel Les Misérables first came out in 1862, people in Paris and elsewhere lined up to buy it. Although critics were less receptive, the novel was an instant popular success. The French word ‘‘misérables’’ means both poor wretches and scoundrels or villains. The novel offers a huge cast that includes both kinds of ‘‘misérables.’’ A product of France’s most prominent Romantic writer, Les Misérables ranges far and wide. It paints a vivid picture of Paris’s seamier side, discusses the causes and results of revolution, and includes discourses on topics ranging from the Battle of Waterloo to Parisian street slang. But the two central themes that dominate the novel are the moral redemption of its main character, Jean Valjean, an ex-convict, and the moral redemption of a nation through revolution. Victor Hugo said: ‘‘I condemn slavery, I banish poverty, I teach ignorance, I treat disease, I lighten the night, and I hate hatred. That is what I am, and that is why I have written Les Misérables.’’ The novel is a critical statement against human suffering, poverty, and ignorance

Ok, there it is! I still dare you to tell me meaning!!?

You pretty much already stated the meaning here.

Too deep for me....., seems like a lot of jonesin' mixed with no meat & potatos substance!

Perhaps you just disagreed with the message? I don't agree personally with Hugo's theme, but I think it portrayed well.

Uh huh........

Duh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...

The movie is the musical so if you loved the musical then you're just going to love it again on the big screen along with some popcorn and candy. :)

It's a story of redemption and love set before and during the French Revolution. The main character does all her can do to redeem himself from past wrongs and is hunted throughout the movie by a guardsmen who's keeping to the law. Main character shows mercy several times and guardsman eventually commits suicide because he can't see past the law to show mercy and believes he has failed.

There is an element that only filming can provide to a previously staged performance. I saw that with Phantom of the Oprah. I really love the movie version and all that is allowed artistically through film.

freebyrdII --- 12 years ago -

Phantom of the Oprah

........now THAT right there is funny!!!!!!!!

TinktheSprite --- 12 years ago -

Hahhahahahahahahaha Too may Bloody Marys!

freebyrdII --- 12 years ago -

Riiiiiiiiight!!!!!!????!!

TinktheSprite --- 12 years ago -

Or not enough! Hahahahahahahaaaaaa

I just saw it tonight. It's wonderful. Acting is superb. Singing mostly very good with some exceptional singers. If you like musicals (I do and know every song) you will love it. If this doesn't win many many Oscars there's no justice. I actually feel I understood the story much better than I did seeing the stage show a few times. I am exhausted from the emotion of it. The acting is so good without being over the top....IMO. And it is ALL sang.....with maybe 3 or 4 words that are "spoken" ...and even then it sounds musical.

napoleon --- 12 years ago -

I saw this movie today - really enjoyed it and glad I went. Glad I had some Kleenex with me.

MoreToLife --- 12 years ago -

By the time a certain character (no spoiler alert here) was singing about death, I was just praying for someone to shoot him and get it over with. If one more person sang, I was going to throw up. It was way way to long! Loved certain parts of the movie, but will never ever sit thru that thing again!

whatchamacallit --- 12 years ago -

Saw it today! Loved it but yes, very long! Perfectly done, did not seem to be 21/2 hours long only twice did I lose interested for just a moment and that is unheard of, for me. I was distracted by the clutz coming in late and dropping popcorn all over the floor, cursing and muttering!!! I will watch it again but it will be at home so that I can rewind to enjoy the songs and pause for breaks! Very emotional, not at all a movie for kids.

SagaciousSighFiGurl (Mod) --- 12 years ago -

I wanna see it. Saw some pretty good clips and it got to me, even in those short moments..

It is I WhyWhyWhy --- 12 years ago -

Love musicals did not love - Rock of Ages. My husband on the other hand does not love musical but really liked Rock of Ages. Go figure.

It is I WhyWhyWhy --- 12 years ago -

Sorry WIP nothing pales to Phantom. Some may be as good but meh and Phantom in the same sentence gasp.

mispissy --- 12 years ago -

You Tube has the 25th Anniversary Concert from London - all the songs including costumes! And at the end, previous performers from past shows come out and sing together. The original Jean Valjean from the West End stage show plays the bishop in the current movie. The soundtrack from the movie is out but doesn't include a lot of songs. The concert has them all!

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 12 years ago -

WOW!!! I'll bet that's fantastic!!! I'll definitely catch that!!!

Work in Progress --- 12 years ago -

Sorry WIP nothing pales to Phantom. Some may be as good but meh and Phantom in the same sentence gasp.

Had I not seen then in such short succession, perhaps I would have appreciated Phantom more. I was in studying in London for the summer, and had an entire life's worth of theater in about 3 months. In my mind, everything that I saw was competing with everything else.

And now I don't go to the theater at all :( (Sniff)

Les Mis was just much more moving to me. Which is pretty funny, considering that a case could be made that it is advocating socialism ;)

And you KNOW how I feel about that!
