I was on the UT-Austin campus last week meeting with some friends and came across a guy on Guadalupe. He held up a sign saying he was homeless.

He said: "Could you give me some change?" as I walked by. I searched through my pockets and did not have any change, so I pulled out my wallet. The smallest I had was a $10 bill.

He saw it and said, "I won't spend it on booze, I just want something to eat". So, I handed it to him.

His face brightened up and he said, "This is more than I have made all day."

Considering I was in a city considered one of the most liberal in Texas I felt his comment was strange. Aren't conservatives (like myself) suppose to be the heartless ones unwilling to help the poor?

During the day I watched the homeless people, and Austin has lots of them. Nobody was giving them money.

On Riverside there is an overpass with a painting of a homeless man holding a sign, which read, "Lots of Humans, but No Humanity!!

The point: In politics (both Republican and Democrat) we generalize too much. Partisanship controls everything. Look at the titles to the blogs on this site:

GOP Spend Spend Spend

NEVER FORGET WEST, OR HOW THE GOP CAN CARE LESS

The Dysfunctional GOP

Republican Objective: Protect the well-off from
redistribution of their wealth to those who don?t

Go back and look for yourself at the headlines. Most are individual (Democrats) painting with a broad (unfair) brush, though I could probably find negative Republicans if I kept looking.

Is it because we are more comfortable attacking a party than an issue?

Is it because we are more comfortable attacking a party than an issue?

It's because they lose on the issues.

Vivre Libre ou Mourir --- 3 years ago -

One of the hallmarks of liberalism is this: You don't ever have to get anything done. You just have to say that you care.

the Markster --- 3 years ago -

The same could be said about "Family Values" conservatives. This admin is doing something positive about it.

The GOP party of NO is only blocking this admin.

RayofHope --- 3 years ago -

The GOP party of NO

You make my point. Paint with a broad brush and ignore the issues.

Emperor of Kingwood --- 3 years ago -

You just have to say that you care.

You mean wearing a little ribbon on my lapel isn't good enough?

Polarization in America

Ray - skim through this. One point he makes, which I think is correct is that the ends of the spectrum are the most vocal, and get the most air time. However, the vast majority of Americans are still pragmatic and issue focused, but in general apathetic. The fringes are framing the debate.

RayofHope --- 3 years ago -

AMDG - watched the video. My high school government teacher made some of the points, but nobody seems to talk about it.

LOL they're saying that they care!

AMDG --- 3 years ago -

Think the vast majority are understandably preoccupied just getting through the day, taking care of their families, and looking forward to an hour or two of down time with the blue TV light washing over them. Combined with an equally justified feeling of powerlessness over the situation.

On top of all of that, the effort to stay informed now with some sort of balanced source of information is getting harder and harder.

RayofHope --- 3 years ago -

LOL they're saying that they care!?

There is too much lip service to issues like homelessness.

a889324uu --- 3 years ago -

Oh look, more whining.

You guys paint democrats and liberals with a singular brush, but want to cry when it's done to you? Comical.

AMDG --- 3 years ago -

Ray - on the other issue you raise. I don't think personal empathy or charity are partisan issues. They are personal traits installed somewhere along the line. Both sides have those who have them, and those who need them.

On a party basis, I also think empathy and charity are non - partisan. I think either side of center has had different political views on how best to deal with it.

Glad you gave the man the $10. Hopefully you got a feeling of helping, of doing something, of at least acknowledging the person. I can also sympathize with those who did not contribute. I think the right answer is the one that fits your conscience.

One thing that I have starting doing, and I highly recommend this, is when I do give a handout, I have been starting to ask their name. You would be amazed sometimes at how their whole demeanor changes. They straiten up, their eyes come up from looking at the ground, sometimes I think they get more out of that then the buck or 5 I give them.

RayofHope --- 3 years ago -

, I have been starting to ask their name.

Never thought of that. I guess they would like to be treated as humans, and not street garbage.

RayofHope --- 3 years ago -

On a party basis, I also think empathy and charity are non - partisan.

I think that is very true. Looking someone in the face seems to have a different impact that speaking in very abstract terms about him/her.

But, I do think we (myself included) spend too much time arguing and posturing.

ukchristine --- 3 years ago -

There's a lot of slactivism going on nowadays.

Not new though as "I feel your pain" has been around since Bill Clinton was President.

Ugly Yapper Dog...cool clown pic. A+

A statement from Bernie Sanders

"It is morally repugnant and a national tragedy that we have privatized prisons all over America. In my view, corporations should not be allowed to make a profit by building more jails and keeping more Americans behind bars. We have got to end the private-for-profit prison racket in America!"

I couldn't agree more. Still think the GOP is "Family Values"? He is winning me over. Love the clown pics^^^^^

the Markster --- 3 years ago -

"If you?re a political junkie on social media, you?ve seen the camps. There?s the Hillary camp, and there?s the Bernie camp.

For the few who still don?t get it: Bernie Sanders is running as a Democrat ? not as an Independent. This means he will not be taking votes away from Hillary if she?s the one who wins the primary. It will be one or the other ? unless we see another rock star liberal pop up."
