I think it needs a new motor, but what do I know?

Susan --- 9 years ago -

Plummer or Handyman? Alspaugh Ace Hardware has handy men service

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 9 years ago -

I might have to call them- I've gotten one company name so far- I'd love to get a referral-

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 9 years ago -

I've had one thing or another go out every week- really getting old-

fuzz81 --- 9 years ago -

Not sure if they're serviceable, but the units themselves are only a few hundred bucks.

Does it do anything when you flip it on?

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 9 years ago -

It hums- and then nothing.

fuzz81 --- 9 years ago -

Yeah sounds like it's jammed or seized

fuzz81 --- 9 years ago -

If you're not afraid to stick your hand in it, unplug it under the sink first and see if you can spin the blade by hand. spinning it backwards might help if it's a physical jam, or see if there's something stuck in it

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 9 years ago -

I did, and it spins. :((

Did some googling. Seems to be common, either flywheel is disengaged or motor problem. Some ppl have fixed them, but they're so cheap it's less hassle to replace.

I would find the same model at lowes so you can use the same flange and swap it out easily. I replaced my whole kitchen sink and the disposal was a breeze

The beauty of a man in the house, fuzz-

Behold the pale horse --- 9 years ago -

So, the only value of a man around the house is his ability to fix thing?

fuzz81 --- 9 years ago -

The women are the brains of the operation. Men just do the labor. Have you not heard of this concept?

AuthorMan --- 9 years ago -

We used Lowe's for a new disposer and labor to install. They did a fine job.

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 9 years ago -

Thanks-

Disposals are super easy to fix and install.

Is it doing anything? Grab a hex key and insert it in the little hole and flip it. That is my first step I take. Also, there could very well be a clog in the pipe there, which is easy to undo, rinse out...I know there are technical names but I just play the pronoun game. You know, that thing...just put it there. LMAO
Is there food or debris stuck in the actual disposal?

What little hole?

a889324uu --- 9 years ago -

On the bottom. I think it has a name. I just don't know what it is.

Prolix Raconteur --- 9 years ago -

Hex head bolt directly under the blade spindle on the bottom of the unit. Also, there should be a little red button or a reset button of some kind underneath as well. If you push that button and are able to spin the blade mechanism and it still won't work, you will likely need a new one.

a889324uu --- 9 years ago -

^ smarter than I and I'm OK with that.

But it usually works!

Miss Understanding --- 9 years ago -

I think I will get a new one with you ATD!!!! I had a small piece no more than half inch of a very hard ceramic I think dish break off and go down ours. Before I ran it I stuck my hand in to get it out but that gives me the creeps and probably didn't try hard enough to find it. Then I ran it and heard it flying around. Then I plugged up the sink with the stopper and filled with some water and then removed stopper and ran it again so all that water would push threw. That is my famous old trick to do when I have a problem. LOL!!! I think it cleared but if it didn't and it won't spit it back out like it sometimes does what do I do next????

They closed down the "Rent-A-Husband" operations.....bummer!

That is a bummer!

Tat, bit the bullet and go to either Lowe's or HD, pick out a new one and tell them you need to have them install it and be done with it.

I've had pretty good luck with installations from both places.

Same here - great job.

They came when scheduled, left no mess, and completed the job in less than 1 hour - within the estimated budget

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 9 years ago -

Yep- I'm going with Lowe's-

LOL... Had to laugh. Actually a disposer is quite easy to replace. I have done 4 of them for myself and a couple of friends. I am not a guy... So what does Lowe's charge to replace one? Maybe I could get a side job...

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 9 years ago -

You should consider it!

TinktheSprite --- 9 years ago -

I had a few issues with sub contractors with our recent home remodel. Namely, males who treated me like I didn't know what I was talking about or I was being stupid with my requests, and were very condescending. I would gladly, GLADLY accept a female or male repair person in my home as long as they treated me as if I were at least somewhat equal.
