If a foreign country (ie North Korea) destroys our electric grid we would be without electric power for months. Forget being uncomfortable sweating in the dark....we would have people dying everyday. Without electricity for months we would no longer have water ... no power to pump water. Only the extreme few people who have a water well with a hand pump would have water. Do any of you even know what a hand pump looks like? Forget flushing a toilet into a public sewer line. Sewer treatment facilities require electricity to operate. Private aerobic sewer treatment require electricity to operate. Again only the extreme few have an outhouse. Months with no electricity means as people die the remaining alive have to do something with all the bodies.... dig graves with no power equipment. Protecting our electric grid is very important. The career politicians in DC don't seem to be concerned.
Electricity is not a necessity, it is a luxury. Home electricity and sanitation (water and sewage) have only been mass distributed for about 100 years in the US. Digging your own well, while hard work, isn't that difficult.
A battery powered shovel sounds funny I agree. Attack on our electric grid has been studied for decades by the intelligent people in science and military. More and more is learned. A recent publication I found is in Newsmax May 4, 2017...by Peter Pry, Executive Director of the Task Force on National and Homeland Security. As I see it the two big questions are first who is capable of EMP attack and second are they WILLING to attack. I believe North Korea ticks both boxes and is at the top of the list.
