Was reading an article about what not to do when writing a resume. I was a little surprised to read that double spacing after a period is no longer acceptable in fact, it labels you as "old" and not with the times. Old habits are going to die hard!

New Times Roman font, the old newspaper style font is not recommended for the same reason. They prefer the simpler, modern Arial font.

I guess Resume styles do update from time to time?

SagaciousSighFiGurl (Mod) --- 105 days ago -

That they do! If you go to Career Builder.com and Monster.com, they actually have good sections to help with hints and form and the latest do's and don'ts.

Using a double space after a period has been bad form for decades.

Emperor of Kingwood --- 105 days ago -

Yeah, I've heard that too.

I see a few resumes a week and to tell you the truth, I can't recall even noticing it. I tend to look more at educational credentials, applicable experience, progressive experience and veteran status.

TinktheSprite --- 105 days ago -

Pretty soon, like a lot of posts (from IPhones, more than likely) there will be no more punctuation.

Translation:

Bob tends to look at if they have previous floor mopping experience, can pass a drug test, and can be within 5 miles of an elementary school.

Well, if experience isn't valued. I for one do not wish to work for that firm. My grey hair is a badge of honor.

True enough.

What is your source?

Would you pass on a qualified candidate for a violation of these rules???...lol

UNTRUE - what is your expert source for this info???

fuzz81 --- 100 days ago -

Lol. Google it. Virtually all mass printed material has used a single space since the 1950s.

What is your expert source that it?s untrue?

That the truth.

fuzz81 --- 100 days ago -

Yeah, take it from the guy who writes ?that the truth?. Totally reliable.

TinktheSprite --- 100 days ago -

Not since the 1950's. I learned how to "type" in High School. They taught, "two spaces after the period". Trust me, that was way, WAY after 1950!

Wiki says this started in 2003:
The Complete Manual on Typography (2003) states that "The typewriter tradition of separating sentences with two word spaces after a period has no place in typesetting" and the single space is "standard typographic practice".

DVaz --- 100 days ago -

I went to Kingwood High School in the Late-90's. Grammar and typing classes both taught two spaces after ending punctuation (. ? ! etc...).

No, that says the book was written in 2003.

fuzz81 --- 100 days ago -

From around 1950, single sentence spacing became standard in books, magazines and newspapers,[10] and the majority of style guides that use a Latin-derived alphabet as a language base now prescribe or recommend the use of a single space after the concluding punctuation of a sentence.

Zapper009 --- 100 days ago -

Technical documents still require 2 spaces after the period - PERIOD...lol

Soooo - that means you were born sometime in the early 1980s?

What?s your source on this? Required by whom? I?ve worked with many technical writers (including ones working to ISO compliance standards), and they never used a double space.

two spaces after ending punctuation

Rule breaker don't care about proper anything. But,
I am getting much better at sign language. Just about everyone I know is going deaf.

Emperor of Kingwood --- 99 days ago -

Just about everyone I know is going deaf.

I just don't get why people accuse men of a certain age range of going deaf when its THEM that have started to speak softly and say things that don't make sense.

DVaz --- 99 days ago -

Yeah, and?

If I double space after a word on my keyboard on my phone, it automatically double spaces. That's on various keyboards, not just the stock one. Also, double spacing after "TX 77339" doesn't seem needed these days either.

DVaz --- 99 days ago -

That's actually a language I wish I had learned. Very useful.

fuzz81 --- 99 days ago -

It automatically double spaces when you hit the space bar twice? Cool story bro.

DVaz --- 99 days ago -

Yes, because it's following current American English Grammatical rules.

fuzz81 --- 99 days ago -

LOL

fuzz81 --- 99 days ago -

My keyboard automatically inserts 5 spaces when I hit the space bar 5 times.

Zapper009 --- 99 days ago -

Where did all of these SPACE CADETS come from...lol
