A look at declining journalism standards from a classroom perspective.

FAKE NEWS

sdanielmcev --- 6 years ago -

A journalist should never become the news.

OrdinaryGuy --- 6 years ago -

The video explains it well.

SagaciousSighFiGurl (Mod) --- 6 years ago -

Journalists are just human beings. They can and should have their own opinions. But slanting the news bc of your opinions is not doing justice to your profession when your job is to report facts. Their job is just to report facts. Why has that become so hard?? We use to be able to do this, didn't we? But Bc of the my side against your side mentality, we now have way less facts and a heck of a lot more fiery partisan passion. It's has permeated every area of society. And anything people are passionate about, they tend to be extreme about.

Look at this site. The few people left here just argue about politics and are rude and nasty. It's a total turn off.

So true!

Emperor of Kingwood --- 6 years ago -

Journalist used to investigate and inform. Their job was to shine a light of truth on government and industry.

Now they view their role as an influential one where they use facts and a mix of other data in a selective way so as to influence the viewer rather than inform.

its about power.

This site isn't a news site. SO, no comparison. Forums are for arguing ideas. Which we do.

There are some unbiased news sources out there, you need to look beyond the typical cable news networks.

BBC, Associated Press, Idaho Statesmen...always check a story against multiple sources to see the accuracy of the information given.

KwMillennial --- 6 years ago -

That’s good to know. But Associated Press?

My current professor claims The Economist as a good source. I read one issue and thought it was well supported but still seemed biased. It’s got to be tough to stay neutral.

Thoughts?

Emperor of Kingwood --- 6 years ago -

Everything will seem biased if it disagrees with a persons opinion no matter how factual it might be. What has happened is people have forgotten to apply discernment skills.

Jepperd --- 6 years ago -

This has been going on for years, it's just you are paying attention to it now because its happening to your guy in office. Where is the outrage with Fox news and its onesidedness? And on the video, for preaching objectivity you sure are only focusing on defending the trump. haha

Thoughts

When there is no opinion in the piece, then it is neutral. However, if there is only one side reported consistently, then that is a bias, also. Read up on William Randolph Hearst., And the sinking of The Maine.

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 6 years ago -

Hearst was a prejudiced, radical elitist who had his companies make sure no one worked for him unless they fit his color and religion.

Emperor of Kingwood --- 6 years ago -

When there is no opinion in the piece, then it is neutral.

Not necessarily. Facts can be presented in such a way as to influence a person thinking one way or the other. Plus, the omission of contradictory facts has the same effect.

Joe Blow --- 6 years ago -

A journalist should never become the news.

You seem to forget: HE WON!

Who won?

Joe Blow --- 6 years ago -

Fake News > Faux News > FOX Opinion.

Fox admits they're not news and only opinion. It's the Fox listeners that are fooled/fools.

sdanielmcev --- 6 years ago -

So, Joey can you focus at all? Who won?
