UpFrontKW --- 10 years ago -

I am a 12 year resident of Kingwood. In the last 2 weeks I've had fraudulent charges made on 2 different credit cards. In both cases, the 2 banks with which I have the cards proactively notified me of the fraudulent charges. Because the cards have always been in my possession, I believe the cards were either skimmed when I used them at some business, or the card info that I gave to make a purchase was kept and illegally used. In cross-referencing the purchases I made on both cards the last month, I believe I may have found a common thread: I used both cards 2 different weeks at a local Kingwood restaurant. All fraudulent charges (approximately $2000) were made at 2 different Krogers and a Walgreens outside the Kingwood area. I know of 2 other people in Kingwood who also recently had fraudulent credit card charges. One of those people used her credit card at the same restaurant I did. I am waiting to hear back from the other person. The manager at one of the Kroger's agreed to cross reference the date/times of charges at his store with cash register logs and video camera footage to possibly get more info. Let me hear from you if you or someone you know recently has had a similar experience with their own credit cards. Much appreciated.

Good for you for looking in to it. Good luck and I hope you find the scumbags.

zapper007 --- 10 years ago -

Guess you are now a professional fraud investigator.

Please let the CC companies know the info - and they will find the perps...

Ed Earl --- 10 years ago -

I appreciate UpFrontKW letting us know.

Big D --- 10 years ago -

I got a fraudulent charge after using my card at one of those wings restaurants in Humble. I don't remember the name but it is on 1960 past the mall

Our credit card was hacked twice in the last 2 months. Both times we notified the bank as soon as the charges appeared and they removed the charges and cancelled the card immediately. We will probably never know where or how it happened and the bank just writes it off. We now have a new card with the imbedded chip but not everyone uses a chip reader yet so it could still happen again. Best thing you can do is check your account frequently and notify the card issuer ASAP when fradulent charges appear. Sorry this happened to you.

Pumpkinpiespice --- 10 years ago -

Thanks for the information! Keep us updated.

Just sent you a PM. We had very similar incident recently. We suspect an employee at a local restaurant as well.

captureit11 --- 10 years ago -

happend to me.

HOWEVER- i shopped at Home Depot which was part of the recent frauds happening (similar to target)

people in Ukraine i believe were the crooks in this one. Gathering your information and selling fake cards to the black market.

Both my cards are on me.

The used my debit at an HEB downtown somewhere. My bank notified me immediately and refunded the money.

mamamiaow --- 10 years ago -

A friend told us of a similar incident, the place where the info was stolen is believed to be a gas station store.(She had a friend who was also hacked, this store was the common thread).

SSG Army Wife --- 10 years ago -

So sorry this happened to you. It totally sucks when an invasion of your privacy comes along like this.

Oregonian --- 10 years ago -

We never ever use a card as a debit card. Card companies have a set limit on charges [low] and we are notified the minute anything over that limit is charged.

Check your accounts daily if you can...we do and so far no problems aside from charges that we did not recognize but were legal.

Credit is nice, but a pain at times too.

Kiddo got a message from the bank alerting to her about a purchase over $300 at Best Buy yesterday, she is at home with mono, so it wasn't her. Bank declined the purchase and cancelled her card. Be curious to see what the possible connection could be

Ellen Ripley --- 10 years ago -

This is so scary! It's happened to us a couple of times from online sources. We had no idea, luckily our bank caught it in time.

MommaD --- 10 years ago -

Happened to my husband also week before last - used at HEB, Walgreens, and Chevron in Humble. We were out of town week before it happened and card was in the safe at home. I sent you a PM - UpFrontKW, wanting to compare where he had used his debit card the week prior.

Mike --- 10 years ago -

This happened to me this weekend. I am trying to figure out where my card info could have been taken. I was all over Kingwood this weekend.

Cajunmom --- 10 years ago -

Was it a restaurant at King's Harbor?

Jracer --- 10 years ago -

I'm curious about the restaurant but I don't know how to PM some one. Any help is appreciated. I got hit this past weekend also. Thanks

Mike --- 10 years ago -

Jracer, I sent you a PM.

DVaz --- 10 years ago -

Cash is King in many cases it's better just to carry both and use the cash.

Lovemyboys05 --- 10 years ago -

Had it happen to us a couple months ago after eating at restaurant in Kings Harbor.

zapper007 --- 10 years ago -

Set the limit at 1.00 for any purchase.

Get an email every time a charge is made for 1,00 or more.

Check every charge.

End of story - sleep soundly.

AngieKaye --- 10 years ago -

just set that any charge is texted to your cell phone and emailed. This is how I caught someone using my card in california and just about wiped out my bank account. Bank thank god gave me my money back!

But this started with a fraud phone call I got, said it was my bank.

Ellen Ripley --- 10 years ago -

After our fraudulent charges, I added settings like most of what Zapper and Angie are suggesting. Love it.

smiles -a -lot --- 10 years ago -

Mine was hit Saturday, charges from CVS and Krogers, total about 500$. PM what restaurants you used please.

chappy --- 10 years ago -

The last place you used your card may not have anything to do with where is was compromised. The data can be captured wirelessly. wikipedia wireless identity theft

I had mine compromised multiple times but have not had any problems since I got and RFID blocking wallet from amazon.

FutureBeachBum --- 10 years ago -

We've had it happen twice too. We had called in pizza orders to dominos the day before each one. I don't order food over the phone with a card anymore.

Mike --- 10 years ago -

I am now thinking it was Pizza Hut on Northpark. After careful examination of where all I had used my CC I am thinking that is probably where it happened.

The only other place I ate was Red Curry but I eat there almost once a week every week and have for a long time.

The other theme I see here is that we eat out to much!

smiles -a -lot --- 10 years ago -

Last week I used mine at McDonalds, Burger King and HEB, all in Kings Crossing.

WatchOut --- 10 years ago -

Why doesn't the OP just tell us the name of the place? WTF is the point of posting if you're not going to spill?

Gigix4 --- 10 years ago -

RFID blocking wallet

If you are going to carry credit/debit card, then you should have one of these to carry them in. Just saying ...

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 10 years ago -

WHAT restaurant??? My friend and i just ate at one of those spots!!! pm me, if you don't want to put it on line!

Emperor of Kingwood --- 10 years ago -

I never reported it stolen. The thief spends less than my wife.

iwaveatcows --- 10 years ago -

it truly would be helpful to know the name of the establishment. If it is only divulged via PM, please advise. However, it would really be kind to share.

*Annie* --- 10 years ago -

If anyone has details, I would live a pm. We do lots of carry out when we get busy or just don't want to cook.

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 10 years ago -

you and all of the rest of us-

RW19 --- 10 years ago -

sent a PM to the original poster and haven't heard a word back

Spunkin --- 10 years ago -

I'd like to know which restaurant too. I had friends in from out of town and paid for dinner last week - two different locations in Kingwood. My card was compromised. I saw a charge pending today that I did not recognize and have reported it. I keep my card in an RFD protective sheath. I did have some online travel purchases in the mix so I am not sure where it was compromised.

SueRDH --- 10 years ago -

This happened to me last week as well. My bank notified me. They used my debit card number at a gas station and Palais Royale in Katy.

zapper007 --- 10 years ago -

Consumer Reports states:

"One security expert suggests wrapping cards in aluminum foil as a cheaper, effective alternative to RFID-blocking wallets or sleeves."
