I thought it was a good, substantive debate.

Winners: Rubio, Cruz, Fiorina

Loser: Kasich

Everyone else held their own. Moderating team was professional and respectful. Good questions, staying on the financial topic. Overall very good debate.

KingOfSomewhereHot --- 9 years ago -

It's not a "debate" at all ... at best it's a question/answer session... that is NOT a debate.
(I'd be more interested if the actually would debate.)

This from Robert Reich:

The fourth major Republican debate began tonight with the GOP's three leading candidates saying they oppose efforts to raise the minimum wage.

Donald Trump: ?There is nothing that we do now to win. We don?t win anymore. ? Taxes too high. Wages too high. I hate to say it, but we have to leave [the minimum wage] the way it is.?

Truth: Too high? Germany is more competitive now than the United States, with a higher tax rate than in the United States, a higher median wage, and even its lowest-wage workers better paid. How can Germany do it? Because its average worker is better educated than the typical American worker (Germany invests like mad in education, including world-class technical education), its infrastructure is more up-to-date, and its workers have more of a direct say in their companies.

Ben Carson: ?Every time we raise the minimum wage, the number of jobless people increases.?

Truth: A higher minimum wage puts more money in the pockets of people who will spend it, thereby creating more jobs. The last time the U.S. raised the minimum wage, more jobs were created than were lost. After I led the successful fight to raise the minimum wage in 1996, a record-shattering 22 million net new jobs were added to the U.S. economy.

Marco Rubio: ?If you raise the minimum wage, you?re going to make people more expensive than a machine.?

Truth: Machines have already supplanted most good-paying manufacturing jobs -- pushing millions of Americans into the personal service sector (retail, restaurant, hotel, hospital, childcare, eldercare, physical therapy, etc) where human attention and touch are are so critical that machines can?t replace human beings. But most of these jobs pay very little. Which is why the minimum wage must be raised. Today?s minimum is already 24 percent below what it was the minimum was in 1968, adjusted for inflation.

What do you think?
I agree. Trickle down did not work (for the middle class) PBO has the right idea for our economy. Middle out economics. Im sure some of yall lock steppers think raising the min wage hurts businesses, or workers will be replaced by automation. I say " We have heard all that before".

Dorothy Parker --- 9 years ago -

It wasn't really a debate at all, I agree.

Kasich shouldn't have interrupted as much as did, but, he had good answers. Rand Paul did as well.

Kasich shouldn't have interrupted as much

He was clearly getting upset (body language). A camera shot caught em stewing.

Anyone interested in some facts? The following is from Factcheck.org

Businessman Donald Trump said that President Dwight D. Eisenhower had forced out 1.5 million immigrants who were in the country illegally. The federal government claimed it was 1.3 million, but historians say that?s exaggerated.

Check out the rest of the candidates at last nights debate.

My random thoughts -

Continue to be amazed people take trump seriously. One of my favorite moments was after trump went on and on about the far east trade treaty being advantages to China, was Paul telling him by the way China is not part of the deal.

He is next to clueless, negative, and without a meaningful, thoughtful position on anything. Sad that people are so dissatisfied that his " everything is awful, I can fix it, I just don't know how" campaign hits a nerve.

Kasich seemed to be on a mission to get a moderate, main line, more realistic less bombastic voice heard - but go so frustrated trying he lost the ability to communicate it well - think he helped the party and hurt himself.

Rand Paul get way way way too much air time to philosophize his conservative nirvana that is impossible to ever achieve. I almost like hearing him talk as much as he does - but he is a bit of mike hog.

Dr. Carson - just does not seem all that quick to me, I mean I know he is a brain surgeon and all - but I have a hard time staying with his logic - he rambles around the questions - and the ah's - and stops, makes him sound uninformed to me. Would have preferred a direct answer to the media story questions than a deflection to Clinton.

Rubio just gives the same basis speech to every question - it plays well on tv because he is comfortable giving it - but I don't think he gave more than a hint of any real answer to any question asked.

I think Barbara did too good of a job of raising Jeb - he is just to darn polite for this format. I don't disagree with much of what he says, but I also don't care that much that i don't. Thought he was going to be the main line candidate - but if he doesn't come in at least 2nd in New Hampshire - I think his run is over.

Cruz is just plain dangerous - his 1930's economic ideas would crush this economy, sad thing is - he knows it - he is not uninformed - he just doesn't care and is playing to his base, who don't under it either.

Kind of liked Fiorina the best last night - she is on topic, seems to have a plan, understands the complexities, the best at communicating her ideas IMO.

Shame that her "likeability" will hurt her - I don't get that I guess

This from Robert Reich

Yeah. That's about all you had to say.

Reich is a Democrat hack.

Something about her really gets to me. Whether it's her tone or her narrow-eyed look of determination. She tries too hard and often comes across as abrasive.

She said "We can beat Hillary Clinton. Carly Fiorina can beat Hillary Clinton. I will beat Hillary CIinton"...huh? Don't refer to yourself in the third person--only whack jobs full of themselves do that.

And FTR, Hillary also rubs me the wrong way with her half-smile smirk and her tone dripping of sarcasm.

Come on candidates, don't be azzhats.

LOL.......... in so many ways.

Sweetest Cherub --- 9 years ago -

Puss, is it just female politicians in general that rub you the wrong way? I have heard other women say this also. I find it interesting that strong women on both sides of the spectrum are considered abrasive, cold, mean or a b--ch. Maybe this country isn't ready for a female president after all?

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 9 years ago -

I don't think the fact that they're women have anything to do with it- Rand comes across the same way to me- abrasive is abrasive in a woman or a man.

Sweetest Cherub --- 9 years ago -

I disagree Tatt. I think a lot of times that a man who is strong, controlling, take-charge is said to be a good leader, but a woman with the same qualities is called mean, cold or a b--ch. I like Carly. She is tough as nails, extremely intelligent, knowledgeable on all topics and can hold her own against any man on that stage.

Red Heifer --- 9 years ago -

thought it was boring.

and they lie. the tax plans don't work, not without creating a huge deficit. nice to think about, but the tax rates theyre thinking about don't work. fantasy. and they know it, which makes it a lie. Kasich is the only one who is honest about that.

trump is all over the place. changes the subject, wont answer a question. clueless.

Rubio did well, to my surprise. bush seemed almost unprepared. cruz still seems weird. rand paul still got busted on that foreign policy thing. carly came off as a lightweight. carson was an afterthought, a little unprepared I think.

AMDG --- 9 years ago -

carly came off as a lightweight.

didn't see that - how so - not trying to fight - just interested in what made you think that.

Always amazed at how 2 people can look at the same thing, and come away with such different perceptions - not an argument - just an observation.

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 9 years ago -

Red's an expert on all things financial- I'm liking Rubio more, too- I still think Kasich is by far the best choice, but apparently not considered conservative enough.

SoupIsGoodFood --- 9 years ago -

Still too many fish in this barrel for me to pick from.

Prolix Raconteur --- 9 years ago -

Kasich was so wound up he looked like Yosemite Sam. Rubio was pretty polished and landed on his feet for the most part.

SoupIsGoodFood --- 9 years ago -

Kasich definitely looked out of sorts.

He was over thinking things.
