Being a Real Man

Thought this Op-ed piece was interesting. Written by a woman, the question she asks of us men is, do you speak up in defense of woman - in the company of men - when there are comments being made that objectify or degrade women.

I think I grade myself about a C+ at best - Something to work on.

Joe Blow --- 131 days ago -

We all know how Karassy Lynch would score on that so don't feel bad.

Emperor of Kingwood --- 131 days ago -

Depends on the definition of objectify or degrade.

Joe Blow --- 131 days ago -

We get it, Booby. We've seen your posts.

AMDG --- 131 days ago -

agree - think we all have to use our own -

how about this for a base line - would you like it said about your daughter ?

Emperor of Kingwood --- 131 days ago -

would you like it said about your daughter ?

My daughter would be an emotional reaction and not a cerebral one. So, its not the same.

SagaciousSighFiGurl (Mod) --- 131 days ago -

I just lose respect, real quick.

Emperor of Kingwood --- 131 days ago -

Having said that, a mans role is to protect and defend a woman.

Prolix Raconteur --- 131 days ago -

Yawn. More social engineering acrobatics, contortions and mewling. "How to be a better straight white guy". Give me a break. I'd expect no less from the NY Times.

see that, but the question did hit home some - We have all been around when conversations like these went over some line - I am pretty sure i never steeped up to stop it as often as I could have.

As a father of daughters, and a brother of sisters, and a grand dad of grand daughters, and as my mother's son. I have been conditions to separate them from that -

In hindsight - that is a poor rationalization -

Change is not always bad Prolix, and I have seen a lot of "social engineering" in the last 50 yrs or so that has been quite good.

Agreed, but all of the social engineering of the last 8 years made middle aged, conservative, straight white guys out to be the bogeyman and target bad guy that had to be re-engineered. It's BS.

Totally agree

Not so far as in the way they view others and want all of America to be like them.

Prolix Raconteur --- 131 days ago -

I don't want them to be like me. I just want them to leave me alone.

Exactly. I worked for my education, I served my country, I worked to build a successful career. I sacrificed for my family. I expected nothing to be handed to me. In fact I didn't want anything I didn't earn.

Judas --- 131 days ago -

In today's news, DeVos thinks its acceptable for male college students to rape female college students as long as they're both drunk.

any of this have anything to do with standing up for women when conversations we are a part of cross a line ??

Nope. It's the normal narcissism shining thru.

Suuuuuure she does....

If you read the posted article AND read Pro's post you would clearly see that it builds on what Pro had posted.

Prolix Raconteur --- 131 days ago -

Not really. The typically pretentious NY Times editorial posited a question in it's typically snarky, condescending way that overrode the actual issue it tried to bring to bear. The editorial itself became the fodder for discussion, not the so-called topic of the editorial.

Some men stand up for women, known to them or not. Some don't. Get over it.

Karras --- 131 days ago -

Still don't know what the author of the column wants. It was a very long winded op-ed.

What would be nice to see from feminists is them fighting against the Burqua and Hijab. Horrible to see these women in the US walking around in those getups. Talk about no respect for women.

AMDG --- 131 days ago -

Just one of those things that hit home for me when I read it. Spent a good deal of my life in a mostly male world - have been in this position a bunch of times - never really did much about it. And never really thought much about "not" doing anything about it. Boys being boys and all.

In hindsight - I think that is wrong - and more men should stop these conversations when they cross a line.

That's it -

The Awe Inspiring JoelleDrees (Mod) --- 131 days ago -

Makes some great points though.

Karras --- 131 days ago -

What conversations are you talking about?

Prolix Raconteur --- 131 days ago -

AMDG - Are you gonna be that guy in the crowd when one of your bros says "check out the ____ on that babe!" that turns around and says "Come on guys, we're better than that and it's misogynistic to boot!"

HAHAHA....I didn't think so.

It's harmless and women do the same thing when they're together.

Now, being directly disrespectful or derogatory to a woman should be called out in a heartbeat. That's a different subject altogether.

AMDG --- 131 days ago -

Not sure what I will do Prolix - certainly think I will be more aware now - Hope I do more than I have done -

Now, being directly disrespectful or derogatory to a woman should be called out in a heartbeat. That's a different subject altogether.

Agree - and like Emp says we all to make are our own call on where that line is.

fuzz81 --- 130 days ago -

LOL. Something hit a nerve

How about direct donald trump quotes "grab em by the p***y" or "I made her my b***h"? According to you that's just locker room talk. So how do you define disrespectful or derogatory? Do the rules change if your wang is hanging out around a bunch of men?

Prolix Raconteur --- 130 days ago -

I wouldn't know, fuzz. My wang has never been hanging out around a bunch of men. Why don't you tell us how that works.

Judas --- 130 days ago -

I think I grade myself about a C+ at best

Leave it to you to never piss in a public men's room urinal. You hold it in till you can pee at home in your own potty?

fuzz81 --- 130 days ago -

So prolix, your wang only comes out in the presence of women? Weren't you on a tirade about gender neutral bathrooms a while ago?

JustWatching --- 130 days ago -

I see the left had to bring Pres Trump into this conversation. It seems to me the next years are going to be really long for them.

Karras --- 130 days ago -

Is using a cigar on your female intern derogatory to women?
