A 15 year- old student at Kingwood High School is a Freshman, involved in Theater Arts. He lives in Trailwood subdivision. He has been sick for one week and it was thought to be flu symptoms at first. Yesterday, he slipped into a coma and is now on life support at Texas Childrens Hospital. The infection has caused swelling which caused a hernia on his spine.

We need to be in prayer for this family! How is it treated?

Lord Jesus in your mighty name restore this child health, mind, an spirit in Jesus name I pray.

a889324uu --- 10 years ago -

That is very scary.
We had an outbreak in Japan, and a fellow sailor's child lost all function and spent over a year in therapy.

The doctors will do their best to medically help this child.

*LOL* --- 10 years ago -

Oh, how tragic! That is so scary. His loved ones must be beside themselves, I am so sorry to read this. Saying a little prayer for their comfort right now.

DVaz --- 10 years ago -

How easy does bacterial meningitis spread? I know it's extremely deadly and must be caught early. Don't they have to monitor the entire school population who came in contact with him.

15 is too young. Pull through kid!

photophanatic --- 10 years ago -

One case is not an out break. For the CDC to designate it as such it has to be 1% of the population or 10% ( I can't remember). I remember when this happened in Montgomery County and they had vaccinatin sites set up.
Prayers for the family.

reh6110 --- 10 years ago -

The news and letter are acting like its no big deal but bacterial is a big deal both for the student and the other students he has contact with. In 2001 there was an outbreak at KHS. That is when the vaccine started to be required. A kid in my band class got it in the spring. I ended up with viral meningitis that summer (not deadly or as contagious but no treatment/cure). I ended up in bed pretty much that entire summer with 3 trips to the ER, three spinal taps, one admit to the hospital and one diatonic reaction to meds. This is not something the school should take lightly.

I don't think in this situation there is any fear of it being contagious from what was said on the news. There are different types of meningitis and I was told this poor child's is Streptococcus Pneumoniae bacterial meningitis.

From Channel 13:

A letter went home to parents of students at Kingwood High School, notifying them that a student there has contracted a form of bacterial meningitis.

In the note, school officials said the student was hospitalized today with Streptococcus Pneumoniae bacterial meningitis.

Humble ISD tells Eyewitness News this is not a situation where the health district is making them notify parents. They say the note is sent to calm concerns.

According to the CDC, "Close contacts of a person with meningitis caused by other bacteria, such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, do not need antibiotics. ... Healthy people can carry the bacteria in their nose or throat without getting sick. Rarely, these bacteria can invade the body and cause disease. Most people who 'carry' the bacteria never become sick."

Below is the full text of the letter that went home to parents:

January 28, 2015

Dear Parents,

We are deeply saddened to share the news that one of our students was hospitalized today, Wednesday, January 28, with a preliminary diagnosis of Streptococcus Pneumoniae bacterial meningitis. Our thoughts and prayers are with this student's family due to the serious nature of his condition.

It is only natural to become alarmed anytime one hears the word "meningitis," but it is important for you to know that this case is NOT Meningococcal Disease. While there are different types of meningitis, Meningococcal Disease is commonly recognized to be contagious and occur in epidemics. Meningococcal Disease is caused by a bacteria called Neisseria meningitidis.

Streptococcus Pneumoniae bacterial meningitis occurs when an infection spreads to the tissue covering the brain and spinal cord. It is not considered to put others at increased risk.

We worked with the family to share information with you about this so that you would have facts and not rumors.

Sincerely,

Dr. Ted Landry
Principal

I read that on facebook but was afraid it was not public knowledge or confirmed. If true, I am so sorry.

Shana --- 10 years ago -

I am praying for his family and friends.

reh6110 --- 10 years ago -

I just heard he was on life support and that they would be removing it at 7am tomorrow. Maybe they got the time wrong. So sad for this family.

Mago4058 --- 10 years ago -

That's so sad, I just got an email from KMS that this poor guy had a brother there. Prayers of comfort for this family.

brian --- 10 years ago -

My kids are distraught. "J" lived two streets over. They went to elementary school together and were at his birthday party this past summer. It happened so fast! Hug your kids!!!

Dorothy Parker --- 10 years ago -

So sorry for his family...what a horrible situation.:(

karenact --- 10 years ago -

I texted with his grandma and right now he needs our prayers for a miracle and also for their entire family. We have known them since he was 4 and can remember him dancing and singing in my driveway :-) Please don't believe things you read on social media and then pass them on in other places unless they come from the source. It has really upset us seeing RIP on instagram and other places when we were told he was still on life support just a little bit ago by his grandma . There are still hopes for a miracle because our God is an amazing God! Maybe if they remove him from life support tomorrow morning like planned it will be because he has miraculously turned around and has been healed! Prayers and love to his family. If someone has more recent information direct from his mom dad or grandma please let me know because I don't want to bother A with a text at this time.

Work in Progress --- 10 years ago -

Thank you Karen. I am praying.

Dear Heavenly Father,

I don't know this boy's status right now, but I know that You are over this situation. Father, this breaks our hearts, because we know what it is to love a child, and we grieve with those who grieve, and mourn with those who mourn. Sickness and death are too great a burden to carry. We can't bear it, it's too much! So we give it to you, knowing that you have already conquered sickness and death. You are a living God, and our great hope is life with You.

Father, we ask that You save the earthly life of this boy, only 15, as a testimony to Your power, Your grace, Your mercy, and to comfort the hearts of His family. But we also rest in the truth that You have already delivered us, and that to live is Christ and to die is gain.

Be with this dear family, as they make decisions regarding their precious, precious son. Surround them with people who will love and minister to them, and take care of them.

In Jesus' name,

Amen!

ladybeachbum --- 10 years ago -

Amen...

Nightshade --- 10 years ago -

My thoughts and prayers are with this young man's family.

Brian, please edit your topic. The last thing Kingwood needs is hysteria over an outbreak that really isn't one. This happened years back and there were hundreds on line for vaccines that weren't necessary.

scarface12 --- 10 years ago -

Prayers for family and friends in Jesus name

photophanatic --- 10 years ago -

Nightshade there was an "outbreack" in 2001 in East Montgomery County. The CDC confirmed as such. The only reason I know this is because when I took my son to his pediatrician for the vaccine and we had to pay $100.00 for the vaccine and were told if the CDC declares it as an outbreak our insurance would cover the cost. We were refunded our $100. But I too remember the long lines at the free vaccination sites. It was a madhouse and I wanted no part of it.

Nightshade --- 10 years ago -

Right...about 2001. But regarding this current situation, one person is not an outbreak.

ACHS --- 10 years ago -

Prayers for the family.

Leila --- 10 years ago -

I have had this beautiful child and his family on my heart all morning.

So many petty little issues surround us during our days that rob of us of precious moments that we could be spending just being grateful for each breathe of life that allows us to be with those that matter.

I will try to remember that and how quickly it can all change. So very sad for this family in our community and I continue to pray for their peace.

Nellie66 --- 10 years ago -

Praying for this young man and his family. May God be with them...

Leila --- 10 years ago -

Giving to others even in time of their most profound grief. What a beautiful legacy and unselfish gift. Please lift his fellow students and friends up today, along with his family. Many young people said their final goodbyes last evening and are dealing with his loss today at school.

Update from Channel 13:

A Kingwood High School student is on life-support for organ donation purposes after being diagnosed with bacterial meningitis, according to Humble ISD.

SpottedPuppy --- 10 years ago -

Can you donate your organs if you die of a bacterial disease? It seems to me that the organs might be infected with the same bacteria.

FANCY PANTS --- 10 years ago -

Can you donate your organs if you die of a bacterial disease?

That is a good question. I would think there would be a chance of infection.

Leila --- 10 years ago -

Can you donate your organs if you die of a bacterial disease? It seems to me that the organs might be infected with the same bacteria.

From my limited understanding, if both the donor and recipient have had at least 24 hours of appropriate antibiotic therapy it is considered safe. With the knowledge and reputation of our medical center, I am certain they would have the latest and most progressive transplant expertise in the nation, if not the world.

Trying to be respectful and sensitive in how I express this, but that may account for the period of time between continuing life support and the gift of life surgery.

SpottedPuppy --- 10 years ago -

Leila, I hope that is the case. That sounds logical.

Of course the best outcome would have been for the young boy to have a complete recovery. But if this is not to be, then organ donation is such a wonderful gift for others in need.
Any family who donates their child's organs should be considered the most heroic people on the planet. To give such an unbelievable gift in their most painful situation is generous beyond words.
