All I can say is I feel for the kid. The parents made a call allowing the child to go from being a female to showing up as a male in one day.

I just don't know how a bunch of 6 YO's will handle THAT and I'd fear for my kid and the abuse he would probably suffer.
As far as the teacher thing, I don't think it's their call to do anything but lovingly care for the children.
What would you do?

"Attorney: Day care workers fired for refusing to acknowledge girl, 6, as boy
Lawsuit filed on behalf of workers in transgender child controversy.

HOUSTON -
Attorneys are filing a lawsuit on behalf of two women who say they were wrongfully terminated from a Katy area day care center amid controversy over a 6-year-old transgender child.

Christian author Madeline Kirksey said she was fired as the manager of Children's Lighthouse Learning Center because she refused to go along with parents who decided to recognize their little girl as a boy. Her coworker, Arkesha Wyatt, was also fired.

Houston attorney Andy Taylor, fresh off his legal victories challenging Houston's HERO issue and rain tax, is challenging the terminations.

"This case involves a little 6-year-old girl who has been attending a private school in Katy, Texas for the last four months as a little girl. She has parents who are a same-sex couple, two men, who decided that she was transgender," Taylor said Tuesday afternoon at a news conference. "On Friday, that little girl left school. I'm not going to use names, but (she was) known to everybody as 'Sally,' and on Monday, this little girl returns to school calling herself 'Johnny.'"

The former staff members said the parents returned the girl to school with shortened hair, demanding that the school change her name. Taylor said the abrupt change was "dumped" in the laps of the administrators without warning.

Kirksey said her religious beliefs made her approval of the change impossible, and she felt that she had a duty to protect the girl from possible bullying and help dozens of other children and their parents, who she said deserved to be told about the change. She said those beliefs cost her a job.

The firings triggered a national firestorm amid growing confusion in schools across the country about handling very young transgender children and their parents' choices.

"The folks who are on the front line - the administrators, the bus driver, the teachers - they had a real issue on their hands. Transgenderism is a major and controversial issue for anyone, even adults. This is a little, innocent, 6-year-old child," Taylor said.

Taylor said most psychiatrists would agree that young children are not ready to make that type of decision.

"At that age, they are still trying to decide what kind of ice cream and what kind of breakfast cereal they enjoy. And their opinions about things change, not only on a daily basis, but on an hourly basis," the attorney said. "To inflict upon a little 6-year-old girl the heavy decision of her sexual identity is nothing short of child abuse."

Taylor said his client has paid the price for standing her ground in defense of all the children at Children's Lighthouse.

"Can you only imagine the reaction of a couple of dozen 6-year-olds when they learn that Sally is all of a sudden Johnny?" Taylor asked. "They may think this is a cruel game of opposite day. And are we going to have little girls running into boys' restrooms and little boys running into girls restrooms?"

He said the issue has gotten out of control and he has filed a complaint with the EEOC.

"It's time for people of faith to stand up and to just say no to the LGBT's insistence on pushing their agenda to the exclusion of the civil rights of everyone else involved," Taylor said. "We believe in equal rights and dignity for all. We do not agree with creating special rights where those rights are elevated and everyone else's rights are not respected. You can't pick and choose which child you are going to respect, because dignity is owed to all."

If what the school staff says it true, the two "dads" are to blame for grossly mishandling this situation. The fired workers stated:

The girl had attended the facility for 4 months as a girl without issue. The dads then brought her in on a Monday and announced she was transgender (a 6 year old!)with no former notice to the school, and gave her a new boy name they demanded she be called.

The little girl was thoroughly confused and alternated between wanting to be called a girl and other times a boy. She threw tantrums either way and caused a lot of grief and confusion at the school.

Other kids were confused and to some degree traumatized by the whole situation, not to mention the staff having to address the little girl's own waffling confusion.

The staff didn't deserve firing if the above was the case. The "dads" forced the issue and created a mess for the school, students, staff and most significantly, have certainly traumatized a little 6 year old girl.

This is a case where Child Protective Services should intervene on behalf of the child to at least make an assessment. In today's PC climate of perpetual outrage over faux persecution, it will never happen.

Leila --- 9 years ago -

That is sad. I have to wonder if this is what the poor child really wanted in the first place. Kids are very impressionable and to be honest, I identified with boy toys and activities as a child more than girl things.

You may have the right (no matter how wrong) to confuse your own child but do you also have the right to confuse all of the other children? There are so many new questions that we never had to ask.

But it seems if you really had the child's interest at heart you would not have thrust them into the situation and expect them to just deal with it. My goodness. Was there counseling and meetings with the staff and the parents of the other children to prepare them for this? What a cruel fiasco.

SagaciousSighFiGurl (Mod) --- 9 years ago -

Good points, Leila.

Since this whole gender identity question is relatively new as far as its openly being discussed, I think it's true that kids at 6 YO are not equipped to handle it.

I think it was a mistake for the parents to just over nite, change the kids identity PUBLICALLY. If you assume, for the sake of argument, that this child will eventually truly want to change genders, I would remain neutral to the child and just let him wear what she wants and play with what she wants without assuming anything either way and just let that play out. I think involving all the other kids at this age was a huge mistake.

I spent more time in trees and falling on my knees from skate boarding and other "boy" activities, and never touched a doll as a kid. So the verdict just isn't in yet IMO. And if it is, the child cannot possibly comprehend what it all means. It needs to play out and be addressed as the child becomes older and more mature and able to comprehend progressively.

As for the teachers, I get they don't want to be a part of something this touchy and possibly in appropriate for the other children, valid concern. They would have been smarter to state that and keep religious beliefs out of it bc it's just not necessary or relevant since these aren't their own kids. They have a legitimate concern as employees, but not based on religious convictions ( ok, I know it still kinda is but...) bc that just complicates this and takes the focus away from their job description and responsibilities which are not based on their religious beliefs.

the teacher had other options, rather than make decisions that weren't hers to make.

a5072145uu --- 9 years ago -

The whole two dads with a transgender kid is questionable at best. A 6 year old GIRL is not a BOY. To think so is disturbing at best. I think professionals need to step in on this one.

SoupIsGoodFood --- 9 years ago -

That is sad. I have to wonder if this is what the poor child really wanted in the first place.

This is where this silliness goes awry.

In this case, it's the parents pushing this silliness.

THEY decided she was transgendered.

This is pathetic parenting.

whatchamacallit --- 9 years ago -

I was always a tomboy, played more often with boys, liked sports and boys toys more than girl stuff. All of this leveled off when I was around 12 or 13. Although to this day, I enjoy socializing with men more than women, I have never wanted to actually be one.

I am so glad that my parents weren't stupid or brainwashed enough to decide that just because I acted boyish as a child that I would want to be a man as an adult!

Sick parents make sick kids or sick parents make kids sick, either way works the same.

Joe Blow --- 9 years ago -

Sounds to me like Taylor's got his own agenda. He's probably just another right wing nut job extremist. This child's situation has nothing to do with the parents homosexuality. How can you be so ignorant???

whatchamacallit --- 9 years ago -

The daycare worker or teacher called it right. When you have a group of kids that you are in charge of, you need to try to protect them all, even from each other and their strange parents. As against all this foolishness as I am, if it just had to be done, it certainly could have been done better. Not notifying the school and expecting kids to react positively to this, especially when she left school as a girl on friday and showed up as a boy on monday, is crazy!

SoupIsGoodFood --- 9 years ago -

This only proves it's being pushed as an agenda by the "parents".

Still laughing at this comment:

good thing the little girl didn't think she was a super hero. These two goobers would have dressed her in a cape and thrown her off a building.

This! But only if superheroes were the current trend. What is is about these insecure people that want so badly to be or have something different in their lives that they would suddenly become gay or bi (ex. Miley Cyrus) or force a 6 year old to choose to be the opposite of what God made her? This is freaky.

Taylor probably took the case pro bono since it's an issue he's tangentially familiar with. But facts be damned, he must be making the whole thing up since he has an agenda. DERP.

Why is this stuff always popping up in Houston?

SoupIsGoodFood --- 9 years ago -

There's something wrong in your head when you just up and decide your child is all of a sudden a completely different sex.

SoupIsGoodFood --- 9 years ago -

Why is this stuff always popping up in Houston?

Because we are local and this is local news.

I'm sure it's happening in other places.

steinhoister2016 --- 9 years ago -

I see it in the news here...it's always something weird with Houston...

It's something in the water.

SoupIsGoodFood --- 9 years ago -

It's not just Houston. Trust me.

You just have this weird hate for Houston/Texas.

Prolix Raconteur --- 9 years ago -

It's everywhere. It's just accepted as the norm in progressive bastions like Portland or Seattle. Having a transgender kid there is some kind of twisted badge of honor because the parents are so enlightened.

SoupIsGoodFood --- 9 years ago -

Yep

mutton --- 9 years ago -

It happened over night, whose problem was it?

esquala --- 9 years ago -

Wonder what the other parents think? My guess is they're furious.

I feel for that poor child too, Sifi.

Dorothy Parker --- 9 years ago -

The only point of view given in that article is from the person fired and her attorney. Disgruntled employees aren't always giving the full or truthful account of events leading up to their firing.

There is another side to this story.

True DP...

FANCY PANTS --- 9 years ago -

I feel so bad for this little girl. These dads are not fit to raise children. They seem to have an agenda to push. This is a case where I hope CPS has stepped in for her sake.

Who's to say the parents were not seeking a doctors help with this and the dr is the one that told them to just go with it?

kingwood resident --- 9 years ago -

People are getting sicker by the day, its totally disgusting.

jacobson --- 9 years ago -

Since this whole gender identity question is relatively new

Gender identity is not relatively new. It has been know from the beginning of time what a male looks like and what a female looks like.

The parents of that child should be cited for child abuse.

Dorothy Parker --- 9 years ago -

Who's to say the parents were not seeking a doctors help with this and the dr is the one that told them to just go with it??

Exactly. We don't know anything about what lead up to this, the interaction between the owner of the daycare and the parents, has the employee had other issues and this situation was the last straw...so many details are missing from the story.

SoupIsGoodFood --- 9 years ago -

Who's to say the parents were not seeking a doctors help with this and the dr is the one that told them to just go with it?

I would cease going to this doctor. He's obviously a quack.

PokerFace --- 9 years ago -

It must be so hard for the Jacobsons of the world when God's rules and real life rules don't match up.

The people who actually should be jailed for child abuse are those who reject and/or try to change their gay or transgendered children because Jesus. Those are the kids who commit suicide because they didn't have the support from the people who raised them. Those are the real sick parents.

SoupIsGoodFood --- 9 years ago -

You mean they're trying to MAKE them gay or transgendered?

Totally different topic, of which I actually agree with the premise, as long as we are talking about kids old enough and mature enough to make that assessment and be comfortable in doing so. That does not apply to any 6 year old, ever.

jacobson --- 9 years ago -

It must be so hard for the pokerfaces of the world to understand that gay or transgendered is not a real life rule.

Biology

Right...I do not believe any biologist or textbook - would support that view...jmho
