POLL: If your child was gay?

In today's world, many people find it exciting and refreshing that gay men and women are starting to be able to live happily in the US, but many people feel the opposite. As parents, we pave our children's paths for them until they fly away from us, our reactions and advice have life-long results in our kid's lives. This poll is more personal: How would you handle your child coming out to you? Feel free to share your thoughts/answers, hopefully we can stay respectful to each others views!

B. Let them know that I love them, but do not accept their sexuality, help them through their confusion. Vote

I think my hubby and I would be in the B/C range! This is an interesting poll, thank you for starting it and I hope others remain respectful too..

Work in Progress --- 3 years ago -

There is nothing in the planet that could keep me from loving my children. They are the absolute greatest blessing in my life and I would die for them. Part of me loving them, is to always be honest with them. I will always be honest about the truth of God's Word on every subject. They will be raised to know the scriptures, and to have discernment even when the world tells them otherwise. I would not treat this sin any different than any other pattern of sin they might find themselves in, because God isn't concerned with politics and activists, He is concerned with our hearts.

So how do you deal with a child who has chosen a pattern of sin? First, you pray without ceasing. Second, you seek earnestly to stay in relationship with the child. This does not mean that you condone the sin, but you seek to maintain the parent/child relationship. Third, you allow the Holy Spirit to reveal when it is the right time to address the sin. If you go it on your own, your relationship will fracture, sometimes irreparably.

You are aiming ultimately at the child's heart, not their particular struggle. It's not about the sin, it's about their relationship with the Heavenly Father. As their parent, you are their shepherd. You don't throw them to the wolves because they stumbled. You don't leave them broken, and hanging on a cliff. You don't berate them, or belittle them. You lead them back! And you handle it as graciously and lovingly as Christ has handled you.

Emperor of Kingwood --- 3 years ago -

I would always love my child, but not approve of their life style choice.

Big D --- 3 years ago -

I would always love my child, but not approve of their life style choice.

You make it sound like a drug addiction.

Emperor of Kingwood --- 3 years ago -

Being gay is a life style choice.

Big D --- 3 years ago -

And the motivation for that choice comes from ...

I can eat vanilla. But I prefer chocolate. I don't know where my preference came from. It just tastes better. So I choose chocolate over vanilla.

Can my taste be changed by someone else?

jacobson --- 3 years ago -

Can my taste be changed by someone else??

Weak analogy.

SagaciousSighFiGurl (Mod) --- 3 years ago -

Before this goes any further, consider this a warning. No disrespect toward gays or each other.

Speak your mind tactfully or there will be icings.

You can call me Michelle --- 3 years ago -

C.

This is true for any sexual depravity and to some extent, sin in general. I would not be supportive of anyone having gay sex, but I would love them no matter what.

waterfall --- 3 years ago -

I like icing.

I love my children unconditionally. That doesn't mean they have to be any sexual orientation f a specific type. I wish for them all the happiness in the world.

It is I WhyWhyWhy --- 3 years ago -

I love my children unconditionally. That doesn't mean they have to be any sexual orientation f a specific type. I wish for them all the happiness in the world.?

Bingo, it is not up to me to decide what is right for their lives they do have their own mind and heart.

nickname22 --- 3 years ago -

If being gay is a choice, when did you choose to be straight?

SueRDH --- 3 years ago -

If being gay is a choice, when did you choose to be straight?

Right answer...For the win!

jacobson --- 3 years ago -

If being gay is a choice, when did you choose to be straight??

People were designed by God as male and female and each sex given the appropriate parts to "hook up" to reproduce. That is a truth that the Bible gives us.

Emperor of Kingwood --- 3 years ago -

If being gay is a choice, when did?you?choose to be straight??

Heterosexual is the natural order, therefore not a choice.

Emperor of Kingwood --- 3 years ago -

Right answer...For the win!?

Wrong answer. The choice to be straight came from the same choice to have 10 fingers or a nose. Its called chromosones. Now, if you can tell me which chromosones cause someone to be gay, I will believe it. To date, there is no scientific evidence to prove being gay is anything other than a life style choice.

It is I WhyWhyWhy --- 3 years ago -

People were designed by God as male and female and each sex given the appropriate parts to "hook up" to reproduce. That is a truth that the Bible gives us.?

David Koresh could have written that book. It doesn't take a genius to figure out where babies come from and how...

Sugarplum fairy --- 3 years ago -

I love my children unconditionally....period! I want my children happy and healthy. If my child is gay....so be it.

Dorothy Parker --- 3 years ago -

My child being gay or straight makes no difference to me. As long as they're being true to themselves and happy, that's all that matters. I would accept them and their partner with open arms.

Work in Progress --- 3 years ago -

What would you do if your child became a Republican? :)

Dorothy Parker --- 3 years ago -

I've already told my kids they should seek out their own political beliefs. Just because I see things a certain way doesn't mean they have to see it the same way. They need to educate themselves on the political issues and candidates, follow their conscience and vote accordingly.

Big D --- 3 years ago -

Weak analogy.

Of course the local cult leader would say that without giving a better analogy. Why not explain why sex choice is different from chocolate or vanilla?

False.
Wrong.
Incorrect.
Weak.

Is that all you have robot?

jacobson --- 3 years ago -

David Koresh could have written that book.

No he could not have.

without giving a better analogy

The truth doesn't need an analogy.

ThisLady --- 3 years ago -

chromosones

Chromosomes** :)

KingwoodKing --- 3 years ago -

But Jacobson, how do you know what you and Bob In Texas are saying is "the truth"?

Big D --- 3 years ago -

Because it says so in a book. That book says it is the truth

jacobson --- 3 years ago -

Because it says so in a book

Even if you believe in the false theory of evolution, even that theory, developed by scientists, recognizes the fact that you need a male and a female to reproduce.

nickname22 --- 3 years ago -

The choice to be straight came from the same choice to have 10 fingers or a nose. Its called chromosones.

So why is your straightness from a chromosome, but being gay isn't?

That is a truth that the Bible gives us.

The bible is a book written by ordinary human beings, who have no proof whatsoever to back up what they claim. Who's to say they weren't schizophrenics hearing voices?

You guys using religion to backup your own hatred is you saying that God/your religious figure is hateful and will allow anyone who isn't in a relationship with someone of the opposite sex to go to hell and suffer forever and ever. Heterosexual couples are the ones who create the homosexual children. Anyone who allows anything to come between themselves and the love for their children should be extremely ashamed of themselves and should never be allowed to have children. How dare you call yourself a parent.

You can call me Michelle --- 3 years ago -

Nickname, nobody said any of those things. You are making a lot of assumptions. God wants what is best for the people He created, and gay sex isn't what is best. One would show hatred toward a person only by encouraging dangerous behavior, not by identifying it as such.

nickname22 --- 3 years ago -

God wants what is best for the people He created, and gay sex isn't what is best.

If you read between the lines rather than read the text alone, and try to understand it in context, I made nothing up. And what is the difference between gay sex and heterosexual sex with the use of birth prevention? Practically nothing, besides the fact that one is with people of the same sex, and one is between people of different sex. If I recall, doing things simply to pleasure yourself is part of one of the seven deadly sins: Lust. That is what protected heterosexual sex is. They are blocking a natural thing, which is pregnancy. Are they also against god? Have you never had protected sex? Since when is two people loving each other bad? We learned from slavery, why not learn from homophobia? And who are you to say what God wants?

KingwoodKing --- 3 years ago -

I think many are right in saying that nothing should stop you from loving or supporting your children. Your love for your children should be based on their goals and their successes. If they find love, whether heterosexual or homosexual (or any other variant for that matter), we as parents should be happy that our child is happy. Why should we force our children to live unhappily because a book says so? Of course, if our children's views our different than ours it can be hard to back them 100%, but if you have a healthy, successful, happy child, you should be a happy, supportive parent!

Dorothy Parker --- 3 years ago -

How is being gay "dangerous behavior? "

nickname22 --- 3 years ago -

Agreed with the two above me. Why is what happens behind closed doors any of your business?

You can call me Michelle --- 3 years ago -

Why is what happens behind closed doors any of your business

It isn't, except that this thread asked a hypothetical question asking for opinions. I gave mine. You gave yours. You attack my personal opinion. Why is my personal opinion any of your business? Probably the same reason - BC it is on a public message board with the intent to be discussed.

You can call me Michelle --- 3 years ago -

How is being gay "dangerous behavior

I'm sure you realize that homosexual sex has unique risks. If you don't know what they are, I don't really want to go into the gory detail.

You can call me Michelle --- 3 years ago -

happy child, you should be a happy, supportive parent!

You (general) could have a happy child who is a crack addict or a Bangcock prostitute. Being a happy, supportive parent wouldn't be a good parenting approach. When our children are making bad decisions, a good parent explains the risks to their child and doesn't blindly throw them a parade for doing dangerous deeds.

nickname22 --- 3 years ago -

I'm sure you realize that homosexual sex has unique risks. If you don't know what they are, I don't really want to go into the gory detail.?

I'm assuming the "unique risks" you're talking about is AIDS. But heterosexual sex also has this risk, along with many many others. But if both parties participate in safe measures, such as getting themselves tested or taking preventative measures, what is so wrong with it?

KingwoodKing --- 3 years ago -

Putting drug addiction and prostitution in the same category as same sex love is very sad. Though of course there are dangers with gay sex, there are dangers with straight sex. Being gay is no more dangerous than being straight, practicing healthy sex is something any human must do.
Like I said before, if your child is happy and healthy, then you should be a happy parent!
