Celebrities Express Outrage Over Killing of Harambe the Gorilla

"A quick decision had to be made," said the zoo director.

Numerous celebrities have spoken out after a 17-year-old western lowland gorilla named Harambe was fatally shot Saturday to protect a child who fell into the animal's Cincinnati Zoo enclosure.

The killing has sparked a debate around the world as to who is to blame for gorilla's death.

?We are heartbroken about losing Harambe, but a child?s life was in danger and a quick decision had to be made by our Dangerous Animal Response Team,? zoo director Thane Maynard said in a statement.

It appears two sides have formed, those who blame the parents for apparently not watching the child close enough and those who blame the zoo for the area being accessible at all to patrons.

Below are celebrity reactions to the incident:

It seems that some gorillas make better parents than some people.

Oh the poor gorilla,he did nothing wrong,if you watch the video,so sad..as a mother I would've jumped in too.

? Lisa Vanderpump (@LisaVanderpump) May 30, 2016
If you leave your kid in a car you go to jail, if you let your kid fall into a Gorilla Enclosure u should too! #TeamDl

? DL Hughley (@RealDLHughley) May 30, 2016
It saddens me to no end that a gorilla had to be put down because of an irresponsible parent. However you look at it, that's just sad.

? Katee Sackhoff (@kateesackhoff) May 30, 2016
If I ever let my toddler fall into a gorilla enclosure please leave the gorilla alone and just shoot me.

? John Fugelsang (@JohnFugelsang) May 29, 2016
Taking their eye off the ball, but no child should ever be able to crawl into a gorilla compound. https://t.co/intjxDvUqk

? Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) May 29, 2016
How was the gorilla enclosure not child proof? You're dealing with an endangered species & yet you've made it possible for kids to fall in?

? Zelda Williams (@zeldawilliams) May 29, 2016
For the record, the parents are absolutely partially at fault, but it shouldn't have been possible, unsupervised or otherwise.

That's outrage? You're a sensational turd. Time for your hissy fit episode now Mitch.

Joe Blow --- 9 years ago -

Cumandgitem needs a nap. Now that the complete video in its entirety has been released its hard to argue that killing it was a necessity.

whatchamacallit --- 9 years ago -

Obviously something had to be done quickly. Anyone know why they could not have used a tranq? Maybe it would have taken too long to work?

Edit:
Saw on TV that it hurts when a tranquilizer is used and they were afraid that the gorilla would get angry.

The Awe Inspiring JoelleDrees (Mod) --- 9 years ago -

Tranqs also take a while to kick in.

The poor gorilla. The poor child.

The mother is who is at fault here. I've been in crowded places on holiday weekends with multiple children before and never once did I lose sight of any of them.

idontplaynice --- 9 years ago -

The mother said accidents happen.

The Awe Inspiring JoelleDrees (Mod) --- 9 years ago -

Sure they do. This accident just caused an endangered animal his life, and it was completely avoidable had she just been keeping a closer eye on her kid.

That was the title of the article. You can calm down now.

Not surprised you side with the celebrities.

FANCY PANTS --- 9 years ago -

I feel bad for the gorilla. The mother needs her butt kicked. Maybe there is something they should charge her with. I don't know but it was certainly not the gorilla's fault.

Puss In Boots --- 9 years ago -

Is it true that she is suing the zoo?

I see fault on both sides--the zoo and the mother. Now the percentage to be attributed to both is up for discussion. No child should be allowed to "fall" into a gorilla enclosure.

them --- 9 years ago -

Here's the video if you haven't seen it.

Keep in mind this quote when you watch it...

The enclosure should have been more secure however I know I certainly never depended on any person or place to keep my child safe as that was my job.

The Awe Inspiring JoelleDrees (Mod) --- 9 years ago -

I tell ya what, if I ever let my kid climb through multiple barriers and fall into a gorilla cage, you can just take my parental rights away. I wouldn't be fit to raise children.

them --- 9 years ago -

There's no chance this could ever happen at the Houston Zoo because nobody can find a parking spot

RedMulch --- 9 years ago -

I agree that they had no choice but to shoot the gorilla, no matter how much they hated it. They are right about tranquilizers. The gorilla would have gone gorilla on them.

At first it appeared the gorilla was trying to protect the child...don't you think?

The mother should be investigated. She was shouting "mommie loves you" instead of being hysterical, which most moms should be. Did she push the baby?

Yes!, did you notice the serene tone of her voice? I'm afraid I might have been climbing down in there to try to get my child...no matter how irrational that would be!

Yes! I would have given myself to the gorilla before he got my baby...or now..my grandbaby.

How great was a life in captivity vs getting shot for having your habitat invaded?

I'm with the zookeepers. They know that animal better than me and they did what they needed to do.

Dear God, that was hard to watch, and I know the outcome. I can't imagine if that were my child. I dont think you would hear me calmly saying "mommy loves you." I'd be down there with him.

fuzz81 --- 9 years ago -

Look at all the republicans saying it's the zoo's responsibility to keep their children safe. I love irony.

Why does man lock up these magnificent animals - for his own pleasure???

And therein lies the real problem.

Or at the very least only house rescues of animals that can't be put back into nature.

They only believe in personal responsibility for everyone else - not them.

Why does man lock up these magnificent animals for his own pleasure???

You answered your own question - it's for man's pleasure and entertainment.
Zoos, circuses, aquariums - no thank you.

Barns?

Prolix Raconteur --- 9 years ago -

Barns?

LOL. Good one.

There's plenty of fault to go around. Parents shouldn't lose a 4 year old at a dangerous animal exhibit. No way the zoo couldn't put up a penetration proof barrier that would keep a 4 year old out. They just got sloppy or didn't maintain the existing structure. Parents suing the zoo is icing on the cake. All they saw right off the bat was $$$$$$$.

a889324uu --- 9 years ago -

Barns?

What about barns?

Or do you lack the fundamental understanding of the difference between wild and domesticated animals?

I have a few science books you can borrow.

LOL. Good one.

You too? Yikes. The stupidity is multiplying.

^^^THAT^^^^^

Wolfram --- 9 years ago -

If the zoo had aborted Harambe, can we all agree that these same celebrities would just shrugged?

mutton --- 9 years ago -

Is a shame on both sides! Watch your children but how can you NOT design an enclosure to prevent it? Seems like you should be able to?

SagaciousSighFiGurl (Mod) --- 9 years ago -

I thought it was interesting that the gorilla itself never looked mad or agitated in any way toward the child. he seemed gentle actually if you have ever seen one agitated or showing aggression. he was dragging the kid but that's the kind of stuff they do. the problem is the sheer brut strength they posses and he could have done serious damage actually just playing with the kid. but he didn't. I know it was super dangerous but since he wasn't agitated or aggressive, why couldn't they just distract him somehow I wonder.

it's a shame they shot him. its great the kid is ok..the mom, eh not thrilled.

mutton --- 9 years ago -

If they had tried to tranqed (sp) him and he had one split second to slam the child before they could snipe him then the discussion would have been why they did not go for the kill. The zoo only had one choice from me own perspective, I feel for them. Was not one taken lightly and they hated it.
