Bush 41 did a good job with desert storm and not going into Bagdad. However, he blew it when he promised no new taxes, then raised taxes. Between going back on his word and Mr. Perot's entrance in the race, Bush would have beaten Clinton easily.

Karras - 41 raising taxes IMO was a very courageous act. He knew it was political suicidee after "read my lips" - but circumstances made it the absolutely right thing to do - he did the right thing for the nation, knowing it would hurt him politically - we could use more of this.

for background - the recession of the early 90's limited the tax base - causing deficits to rise. There was a law on the books then, Grame - rodman - hollings balanced budget act that was going to mandate significant spending cuts - that would have to be taken out of social security or defense - all unpalatable. The only answer to not taking the cuts, and staying within (a stupid) law - he had no choice but to raise taxes.
