I went today for the grand opening and saw Scott McClelland and other HEB vips greeting customers. The store is huge!! The produce section is fabulous. It's going to take some time to get familiar with the store. What do you think of the new HEB?

Rubicon --- 8 years ago -

It's beautiful. I went early after dropping a kid off before the sun came up. There were tons of friendly HEB workers with smiles on their faces.

DS got to interview Scott McClelland.

*LOL* --- 8 years ago -

I'm heading there tomorrow!

TinktheSprite --- 8 years ago -

I think it is too crowded for me to venture over there for at least a month. Was at the intersection at 4pm. Too much commotion from what I could see.

Participation Badge --- 8 years ago -

What are the hours? Don't want to shop while all the clubwives are there.

a3565108uu --- 8 years ago -

Hours are 6am to 11pm

a3565108uu --- 8 years ago -

It's a great store! I'm going to love shopping there!

Karras --- 8 years ago -

The HEB is so great, it makes me wonder what they will put in the Randall's location in a couple of years.

Joe Blow --- 8 years ago -

karass is dusted off since urabunchcats is on ice.

LMFAO

Emperor of Kingwood --- 8 years ago -

Its ok. Its just a grocery store.

Texvette --- 8 years ago -

I miss the "On The Run" deli

So ... does the new HEB have the salad bar like the old one did?

Trillian --- 8 years ago -

Beautiful store. Gorgeous produce section. Disappointingly small bulk herbs selection. And no prepared food except sushi?

They have huge section of prepared foods. Most are single serving. Located in small cases in the middle before you get to meat. If you are looking at sushi they are behind you.

I was not impressed. A lot of things I purchase were more expensive. A few things were over a dollar more and not a lot of variety on things I normally purchase. Not worth the drive to pay more and not get what I really want.

Andreweggplant - im curious which store you were comparing prices with ? Thank you

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 8 years ago -

Certainly not Krogers or Randalls- Aldi's maybe?

Kroger... example.. dog treats mine likes.. Kroger $1.00, HEB 1.99, Special K protein bars Kroger $2.58, HEB $3.87, 1lb frozen chicken breast Kroger $5.99, HEB $6.96, Tombstone Pizza Kroger $3.49, HEB. $4.59, Clemetines Kroger $4.99, HEB $5.99, Cucumbers Kroger $0.50 HEB $0.58, zucchini and yellow squash Kroger $0.99/lb HEB $1.29... I could go on and add more. Over time this all adds up and makes HEB more expensive and not worth the drive...

whatchamacallit --- 8 years ago -

I have not been to the new HEB, yet. I can tell you that I have lived in a city where HEB came in and consistently marked all of their items REALLY low, until they ran all of the other stores in the area out of business. Of course, after that they hiked everything up sky high, as no one had any other choice but to buy it from HEB. I really like the HEB stores but they are ruthless when they get a monopoly on an area so we need to keep Krogers and Randalls in business here, for that reason alone.

They have to pay for their big, bright new store somehow! I find most Central Markets to be a tad bit higher than their regular store. I guess they are right up there with Randalls?

I could say the very same thing about Kroger. They did that when the Northpark Kroger went from a regular Kroger to a Signature store. Same food. Higher price. They made it sound like it was a deal when you used your Kroger card when it just brought the price back down to normal. Groceries are all such a marketing scam. You really gotta know prices on what you are buying or simply prepare to pay more.

Think he shops at the Kroger by Hot Biscuit.

*LOL* --- 8 years ago -

Why on earth did they get rid of the cafe on the run? Maybe when they open the sit down eat-in area of the store then they will have fresh meals to go? I liked buying my love dip at the counter there. It doesn't taste as fresh to me in the prepared containers. And I miss the salad bar. I hope I'll get used to it, but right now it seems almost too big to me.

*LOL* --- 8 years ago -

I also thought it was weird how all those donuts and stuff were displayed out in the open. I would prefer them to have some kind of protection from all the germy people, at least a sneeze guard.

TinktheSprite --- 8 years ago -

^^and kids' hands, and flies and whatever. They have food that cannot be washed out in the open? Not wrapped?

tennismommy --- 8 years ago -

I found out a month before HEB moved to new location that they were not going to have a salad bar. I encouraged everyone to email HEB to have one for new HEB. I ask HEB employees about salad bar and they said that it was not profitable for the company. I think they may lose people because of the loss of the salad bar. Prepared salads do not taste fresh and cost so much more. I thing I might drive to HEB on 1960 to get groceries because they are cheaper. I miss the old HEB. They hired so many new employees and cut hours for the previous employees. The new HEB will have a restaurant inside and it will open in January.

Gigix4 --- 8 years ago -

I did send HEB an email regarding their decision to not have the salad bar. I did receive a reply from them indicating they would send my request to the "appropriate department".

I loved being able to just run into HEB and get a salad and selecting only the ingredients I wanted. :(

Finally made it in there this weekend. Lots of folks were complaining that they did away with Café on the Run. Kinda surprised they didn't carry that over to the new location. Always seemed to do good business and was a good way to grab a quick side dish for a home cooked entre or even a whole meal. Their roasted rosemary potatoes were the bomb!

Other than that, lump blue crab meat for $7/lb and fresh cut Ahi Tuna steaks were first in my basket (after I raided the huge produce section). The still-warm, fresh made mozzarella cheese they were sampling was melt in your mouth good, too!

Looking forward to things settling down, having more time to explore, and bringing home a couple of those gorgeous Kobe beef NY strips!

Sweetest Cherub --- 8 years ago -

We loved it!

fuzz81 --- 8 years ago -

I can tell you their kobe beef ribeyes are amazing. Grilled some a few days ago. 650 degree cast iron over charcoal for 2 minutes a side. Perfection.

TinktheSprite --- 8 years ago -

Do they have their marinated olives bar?

Emperor of Kingwood --- 8 years ago -

Their seafood looked excellent. Love the scallops and Chilean Sea Bass (Patagonian Monk fish).

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 8 years ago -

Prolix, maybe they'll add the Cafe on the Run- All the Central markets have it-

DVaz --- 8 years ago -

When I was growing up HEB in Porter was the "Poor people's grocery store." The Atascocita one wasn't much better.

TinktheSprite --- 8 years ago -

^^That's because Central Market specialty items hadn't been invented yet. I remember HEB in Porter. It wasn't all that, and yes, it looked poor.

*LOL* --- 8 years ago -

^^and kids' hands, and flies and whatever. They have food that cannot be washed out in the open? Not wrapped??

Yes. Donut's and pastry items on a display in the open. There is a bit of plastic shield over the top nut certainly not enough to protect from grubby hands and coughs. I'm surprised it is allowed by the health dept.

Of course, I have to admit that I won't eat the guacamole they leave sitting out or the cheese or other sample items they leave sitting out. I see kids poking around in that stuff all the time..ewww.

gunsnroses --- 8 years ago -

Yes, they need better sneeze guard protection.

Karras --- 8 years ago -

The store is nice. Great to see all 20 registers with checkers and baggers on Saturday.
However, the store is too large for a light shop for a couple of items. For that I will go to neighborhood Walmart.

TinktheSprite --- 8 years ago -

^^That
I have come to hate Mega Food Stores. I usually leave with something still on my list because i don't have time to hike allllll the way across the store to get it!

Prolix Raconteur --- 8 years ago -

Filling the short list with no parking hassle is Randal's new attraction.

fuzz81 --- 8 years ago -

For that I will go to neighborhood Walmart.?

Please do.
