KPHS graduation, 2013. what was she thinking!?!?

Mago4058 --- 12 years ago -

Was it as bad as kHS 2001? That speech was hilariously mean!

reh6110 --- 12 years ago -

whoops wrong school

AngieKaye --- 12 years ago -

I beg to differ. She was awesome and was praised by everyone. She's an awesome sweet kid that deserves her day.

reh6110 --- 12 years ago -

This is the one I was talking about! It was the worst ever.

beachnutty --- 12 years ago -

She systematically threw everyone under the bus - teachers, every single classmate, the audience, she insulted and humiliated large segments of the population (...or you might wind up some crappy bag boy or food service worker), to CONSTANTLY referring to herself as "#1, the top, the best of all of them, the smartest of them all, the highest achievement of them all"...it went on and on.
It was excruciating. And to top it off, she delivered it very poorly - kept losing her place, saying "ummm" repeatedly, losing her hat, laughing at all her own jokes when the res of us sat in mortified silence...
Just unbelievably painful. I hd to fight the urge to stand up and shout "SOMEBODY HELP HER!!!", hoping someone would do a flying tackle on her away from th podium. Any pain she would have felt would be less than the pain she's going to feel once she realizes what she's done.
Doesn't somebody vet these things before they are allowed to deliver them?

beachnutty --- 12 years ago -

Every single parent around ME was gasping and whispering. I was personally offended. A college age student near us shouted out "You suck!!!", but he didn't do it loud enough. The students I was there to see graduate (was with friends) universally panned it at dinner. They're the ones who voiced first the title of this thread.

She may be a sweet girl in real life, but she did herself a terrible disservice by not getting help in preparing that speech.

Polly Ester --- 12 years ago -

ugh. well, if she said those things, that is embarrassing. I dont care how "smart" you are, if you dont have social intelligence, your "smarts" wont get you very far. I also know plenty of people that were ranked at the top of the class in high school that bombed in college.

I thought the point of the commencement speech was to inspire everyone graduating and about your classmates and their future. maybe someone thought it was an Oscar they were accepting, lol.

arent there counselors or someone that guides them in this speech writing process?

Warren Peace --- 12 years ago -

I just picked up my middle son who was at Reliant Stadium all day to assist. He said the same thing. I thought he was exaggerating, but apparently not.

AngieKaye --- 12 years ago -

Ever thought of trying to make sense of where she was coming from? maybe the point was...

If you dont try and settle for a low end job, you will end up in a low in rutt. Why accept a low wage job, below your capabililties, why not push yourself a little harder and become the best you can.

And no.. there isn't anyone that helps them write their speechs. They each have to write from the heart.

because life isnt all about wages and jobs. not all of these graduates are going to be attending college or snagging high paying jobs. there is a lot of inspiration that can be imparted in a graduation speech just about praising everyone for their achievement of graduation no matter how hard it was to get there and encouraging them to make a difference in their life and the world. as far as jobs go, it doesn't matter if that is being a bag boy or a CEO. be the best at whatever job you have and hold your head up high.

patchycat --- 12 years ago -

Well said, Hissy!

AngieKaye --- 12 years ago -

personally you can't raise a family by sackin groceries all your life. If you apply yourself you can work your way up. Better yourself. I am not saying everyone needs or can go to college.. but you can learn without school. Dont settle for being low end.. apply yourself and make the best of life.

We all have started out life in minimum wage jobs. We dont have to stay there. Some will and some will also be on welfare for life. But its best for you and your family for you to get out there and bust down doors and learn.

K-Park or KHS?

Cajunmom --- 12 years ago -

Sounds like a lot of sour grapes here. I have hard time buying into this as I heard her speak at the Honors Banquet and it was anything but what you are saying here. Go figure.

AngieKaye --- 12 years ago -

K-Park or KHS?

they are griping and downgrading Kpark

Funny she is at my house all the time and I would NEVER think of her as saying what they said. Sounds to me they only heard what they wanted to hear...

CitizenOnPatrol --- 12 years ago -

I gotta' see/hear this.

tinman --- 12 years ago -

First off....the CHILD is only 17 or 18. We've all said things at that age and done things at that age that you would never think of doing as a parent or full grown adult.

The fact that a 17 or 18 year old's "appropriateness filter" was turned off for a few minutes surprises me....like....not at all.

If someone is going to give me the bully pulpit, and I have things on my mind, then things are going to get said.

The thought that some on here think that her speech should have been previewed or somehow vetted absolutely flies in the face of everything we should believe in when it comes to free speech. You may not like what she has to say, but you absolutely must defend her right to say it.

Semper --- 12 years ago -

I have sat through a few if these speeches and they have always been about how great and accomplished the valedictorian is. Personally if my child was to give the speech I would not expect that to be the focus of their speech. Everyone knows the the valedictorian kicked butt during high school. If they hadn't they would not have been selected. This is the perfect opportunity to thank those people to whom you owe your success because regardless of how awesome you are...you had some help along the way. This is also the time to inspire and motivate your classmates. The speech should contain many "you's" and "us" and a lot fewer "I's".

movedagain --- 12 years ago -

The KHS speech was okay, and she was quick so it was good! The sad thing was the honorary diploma :(

Semper --- 12 years ago -

The sad thing was the honorary diploma :(

What is this?

Saturn --- 12 years ago -

Honorary diploma means there are many grieving family members here that did not get to see their child physically in this world walk to receive their diploma:((

planemom --- 12 years ago -

Another friend said the same thing about the speech. Did she not ask anyone to listen to it before she presented it? Or do you think they blew sunshine at her rather than tell her the ideas might sound but insults are not the best way to get your point across?

SagaciousSighFiGurl (Mod) --- 12 years ago -

What did she say anyway?

willow10 --- 12 years ago -

I also felt like the speech was very pretentious and condescending. Knowing her personally, she is a very nice and polite girl, but that speech was a huge disservice to her class.

willow10 --- 12 years ago -

I was told that the speech she delivered was the edited version.

Aah Grasshoppa --- 12 years ago -

The KHS speeches were really good. And they sped through the names handing out diplomas.

LAXmom --- 12 years ago -

First of all 17-18yrs old is not a child anymore - you're a young adult by that age - IMO. I didn't hear the speech, but if your smart enough to be the smartest in your class -you should be smart enough to write a good, inspiring, well thought out, checked over, checked out by others - speech.

Semper --- 12 years ago -

I would be interested in reading or hearing the speech. Sounds like is struck a major nerve.

SagaciousSighFiGurl (Mod) --- 12 years ago -

Me too. I also thought all those speeches delivered publically like that had to be read and approved by admn.

Spinqueen222 --- 12 years ago -

I taught high school for many years. The Valedictorian speech was previewed by a teacher. The administration needs to look into this.
It is great to try to achieve the best job you can get, but no matter what job you have, do the best you can at it and hold your head up high! Some people would prefer not to work than work a job that they think is beneath them.

constmanager --- 12 years ago -

I would like to know where she would have ranked if she went to KHS.

SineadORebellion --- 12 years ago -

Ahahaha I was class of 2001......thought that chick was gonna blow us all away during her speech!!

Loki --- 12 years ago -

Didn't hear the speech so just going on the general interpretation:

ALL non government jobs have value and those that do them should be respected.

A plumber may not be an executive, but you'll thank god for him when a pipe breaks.

A housecleaner; blessing when you have a sick relative that needs the help.

The trash guy keeps our communities healthy and sanitary.

I could go on like this about every job, you get the drift.

Dissing on ANY "non handout" job is despicable. All are needed and would be sorely missed if the gap wasn't filled. None are less deserving than any CEO out there. None should be shown disrespect.

Sorry ms valedictorian, the world cannot function just with doctors, lawyers, research scientists, ceos and so forth. In fact, our country might just function better if it wasn't so top heavy with "important" people.

And assuming that people are "downgrading" their ambitions by taking these "lesser" jobs is pathetic. Some value happiness, family, interests over fame, money etc.

Some weren't born with a silver spoon in their mouth or genes that code for specific kinds of gifts/talents. Not everyone can be a "superstar" by YOUR definition. But they sure as hell can be one by mine.

Loki --- 12 years ago -

And if the speech and attitude are being represented fairly, little ms perfect has a rude awakening.

Life has a way of humbling the most arrogant. (I know...)

Just takes one nasty turn of events to change everything.

And often the "best and brightest" find out that they aren't such after all.

Semper --- 12 years ago -

College is a much bigger pond than high school.

whatchamacallit --- 12 years ago -

I don't know this girl or anyone graduating and did not hear her speech but I just have to say that although she may have not said what you adults think she should, she has/had the right to say what she wanted.

Funny, you guys sound so jealous, must have brought up old insecurities from your past.

Loki --- 12 years ago -

she has/had the right to say what she wanted.

And? We have the right to say what we want as well. So what's the problem?

Funny, you guys sound so jealous, must have brought up old insecurities from your past.

jealous, LOL! Even by her standards I'm very successful. But I don't look down on the lady who empties the trash can in my office and assume that she lacks ambition. I don't know her history, her values, her challenges, her goals and so forth. I'm not going to judge her as less than myself. We all die in the end.

lindab --- 12 years ago -

"I wonder how she would have ranked if she went to KHS."Wow..constmanger you are a jerk! Last I checked the curriculum is the same for all Texas high schools.
