Reading a story about a dentist who is a big game hunter. He is in trouble for recently killing lion in Africa.

This dentist goes around the world killing Rhinos, Cheetahs, etc.

I don't know what the appeal is to kill these beautiful animals. If one is hunting for food, sure. But just to have a "cool" facebook entry and a head for your wall doesn't seem like a it's worth it.

Ive wondered the same thing. Especially the way they hunt. A guide drives them around, points out the animal to shoot, usually the sick one or the trouble maker, and they shoot it from the truck. What a thrill.

That particular lion was well known and beloved. How those hunts are arranged, it's more like hunting in a pet store. It doesn't take skill, just money. 

Him being a dentist is only relevant so that people know who it is. His web page is shut down and the Yelp reviews are awesome!

They lured him off the preservation land, shot him with a bow, tracked him for 40 hours, killed him with a rifle, decapitated him, skinned him, and then attempted to hide/destroy his tracking collar.

This is more than just killing an animal. The fate of many lions is now in question, and the lion killed wasn't old, sick, or injured, but a well known and loved fixture.

The only big game that seems like a challenge is hunting big horn sheep with a muzzle loader. 

I just can not imagine getting any pleasure out of that. Such a magnificent creature.

I also didnt read the article. I was thinking it was one of the legal hunts. It's legal to hunt just about anything for a fee in africa, even elephants. 

He deserves whatever ramifications come of this. 

Even if he did it legally, I still don't get hunting big game. Seems like a waste of an animal, money and time.

I know. According to the laws in Zimbabwe, the client will not face any charges, it will be the professional hunters.

His office had to close today. I feel for his employees, but any hell that falls upon him is fine by me.

There is a rhino in Africa that is guarded 24/7 by armed men and his horn was removed to prevent poaching. That's sad.

Exactly. It's not hard with all that fancy schmancy gear..all the way down to his Duluth training pants. Now ..bow hunting would be impressive. My Dad was an excellent bow hunter...didn't need all that expensive gear.

And then he severed the lion's head for his trophy. That is how the officials found out Cecil was killed. They found his headless body.

Its distraction media...this kind of poaching happens all the time but no one knows about it outside of those countries...no outcry no nothing...gets people riled up for a day or so and that's it...we don't give too much more attention to people being killed in this country. why all the emotion for a lion? Did you give the same attention to the women who were shot and killed last week in California? Did you know about it??

good point. It takes all the air out "Born Free" you may be to young to remember that movie. My point is there are few things that the majority of KUers agree on. This being one. Lets milk it. Or, lets put on some clown costumes and go drone hunting. Just stay away from the banks. They don't like folks in disguise with guns.

Big Game Hunting is a "status symbol" and a ego problem.

How do you possibly put a value on such a beautiful animal. 

He is in trouble with the US Authorities. Fish and Wildlife Service are looking for him. And his local police won't protect him as the protest continue in front of the DDS's home.

"We're investigating the killing of #CecilTheLion. Will go where facts lead. We ask Dr. Palmer or his rep to contact USFWS immediately."
