Cheer Mom x2 --- 10 years ago -

I am beyond angry at the fact that current KHS freshman are not allowed to tryout for the upcoming school year's varsity squad. At every other high school in Humble ISD (KPark, Atascocita, Humble & Summer Creek), sophomores are allowed to cheer on a varsity squad. At KHS, a sophomore is limited to a JV squad, no matter how talented she or he may be.

How is it fair that freshman and sophomores can play a varsity sport at KHS, but a cheerleader in the same grade cannot cheer on the varsity squad? Effective 2015-16, UIL will acknowledge cheerleading an official high school SPORT. Yes, cheerleading is a sport.

During elementary & middle school, so much emphasis is put on equality. All class parties must be the same. You can't pass out party invitations for fear someone will be left out. But it's ok to afford the opportunity to be on a varsity squad at one school, but not another. Why should the kids at KHS, who have put just as much time & effort into cheerleading as their peers, be told they can't make a varsity team.

The same rules should apply to EVERY high school in this district.

Mago4058 --- 10 years ago -

Have you asked why? I'm not a cheer mom but curious. Maybe because of size? I hate that students can transfer to kpark because KHS is too big and their darling child won't make the team there but due to size probably does at kpark. We bought our home knowing we would be zoned to a smaller high school. I agree with you doesn't seem fair, but a lot of things humble ISD does doesn't support fairness (talking from experience in the sports department).

justcat --- 10 years ago -

Yes. My niece is a varsity cheerleader at K park as a Soph. Maybe because there are so many girls at KHS? I guess every school is different.

Cheer Mom x2 --- 10 years ago -

The reason isn't size. They actually dropped 1 of their 4 squads this year. Without directly pointing fingers, it is the decision made by one individual. A couple reasons are because a sophomore doesn't belong on a squad with seniors, yet it's ok on a football field. A sophomore is still "adjusting" to high school, and might not be able to make the commitment it takes to be on a varsity squad. Aren't these decision we as parents should be making? I don't need a coach telling me whether my child is mature enough to cheer along side seniors. Or if my child will be able to make the commitment it takes.

Many of these cheerleaders also cheer on competitive teams, which takes a substantial commitment. At the high school age, these cheerleaders are placed on senior level teams, which could range from 12 to 18.

Cheerleading has changed so much in the past several years. School cheer programs also need to evolve with the time. Some have, but others are unfortunately stuck in time.

Cheer Mom x2 --- 10 years ago -

But that's my point. Every school should NOT be different. Atascocita High, which is a 6A school, allows sophomores to cheer on the varsity squad. And last year's squad was 4th in the nation!!

I just think KHS cheerleaders should be afforded the same opportunities as those in other high schools within the district.

Sharticus --- 10 years ago -

This situation has gotten a lot of people upset already. I think the best thing to do is take a deep breath and we should all temper cheer for a while.

zapper007 --- 10 years ago -

Boooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!

How's that for a cheer...get a life!!!

BalletMom --- 10 years ago -

This seems wrong... If she's good enough to be on varsity... She should had that opportunity .. Fight on, Cheer Mom!!! Good Luck!

txwareagle --- 10 years ago -

Every school should NOT be different.

Of course they are going to be different. They are different schools managed by different people.

The KHS coaches need to do what they think is the best for KHS. What KP does is irrelevant to what they think is best for their school.

As long as the AD buys off on it, you are stuck with their rules, unless you transfer. Talk with them and see what they say.

Its Mygirl01 --- 10 years ago -

I'm sure it also is to protect the spots on the varsity squad for seniors since they've been working for that their entire cheering career.

Imagine your daughter getting bumped from the varsity squad her senior year by a sophomore, you'd be back on here complaining about the policy in reverse!

ukchristine --- 10 years ago -

No spot should be protected IMO. The best person should have that spot.

If somebody works hard and achieves more than somebody else why would you give the spot to the less capable by virtue of seniority? It's competition about the best one wins not the most entitled wins?

Dorothy Parker --- 10 years ago -

Look at it this way...if your daughter is good enough to be on Varsity now, think of how awesome she'll be on JV. She'll stand out among the crowd. :)

Let her shine as the best one on the team instead of fighting for her to be average.

Genuine Plastic --- 10 years ago -

Let's hope Cheer Mom x2 doesn't become Wanda Holloway x2. These moms are scary!

FANCY PANTS --- 10 years ago -

Let her shine as the best one on the team instead of fighting for her to be average.?

Bingo!!!

I never have understood why people push there kids to be moved up to the next level when they my not be mature enough.

Emperor of Kingwood --- 10 years ago -

Maybe academics should be the focus.

Dorothy Parker --- 10 years ago -

In order to maintain eligibility for sports, you have to keep up your grades.

It also helps a person to be well rounded. All work and no play, makes Jack a dull boy.

SleightOfHand --- 10 years ago -

Why? Former varsity cheerleaders make great housewives.

Or they continue to try to look, dress and act like they are 18 at age 50.

No wonder you're always so bitter.

Seeing them dressed like that and while they tan so much they resemble their leather purses. Nasty

needsleep --- 10 years ago -

Not a cheer mom but have to think many of the girls on the varsity cheer squad are very good. All deserving of their spot. The varsity team rosters about 25. Kingwood has an amazing pool of girls in dance this is why we have the phillies. Highly competitive. You are lucky cheer has a freshman team and an alternative program girls talented in dance can join. Be happy your daughter made it on such a selective squad.

Cigawitz --- 10 years ago -

Is there a JV squad or a drill team? Something to do that will keep them busy.

One more thing - avoid KPark! The rape case against their Coach Harlan keeps getting reset. The poor child will graduate college before the judge tries this case. And keep an eye on all the KPark faculty that knew but looked the other way...

Welcome to KingHood!

Warren Peace --- 10 years ago -

But that's my point. Every school should NOT be different

Why? One of the best lessons in going to a public school is that it's ok to be different. It's also valuable for kids to learn that they can handle whatever life throws at them without regard to whether or not mommy thinks it's fair. Let go. Let your daughter experience this minor lesson in life, and help her figure out how to be the best she can be without the influence of mommy's emotions over the perceived unfairness of it.

Your first sentence on the topic reads like it's a way to put a way out of proportion emotion on display for everyone to read. Maybe spend some time addressing that so your daughter can learn better adaptive skills?

RedMulch --- 10 years ago -

There is life after cheerleading...just sayin. There was a time that i didn't think so, but i was wrong.

Wicked --- 10 years ago -

Way back in the old days, I was a cheerleader and it certainly was not a sport back then. We had to stay within our classes, Frosh and Soph could only go out for junior varsity. I don't blame you for being upset as it is ok for a Freshman football player to play varsity. Just another old white man rule where women are kept in their places. Fight the good fight. Get him/her on the varsity squad. Especially if they are good and can get the team to a championship.

RedMulch --- 10 years ago -

In the state of Georgia, cheerleading was a sport until about 1995. That meant that you could not obtain a college scholarship for cheerleading. I do agree it should be a sport. I was convinced of that when a local GA cheerleading school had an instructor who was a University of Kentucky male cheerleader as an instructor. He could do double backflips from a totally still standing position. Amazing. an image burned on me brain. lol

sheddy --- 10 years ago -

Be careful what you wish for. Just because you think your child is better, doesn't mean the judges do. I know two sisters who had always cheered and one year the younger made the varsity the older didn't. Of course, she was heartbroken. Her mother said the older was more talented, but the younger had the perfect cheer body. Sometimes you can't win. Personally, I think they should stay with their age group. 17, 18 year old girls are in a completely different place than 15 year olds.
When my daughter cheered, there were 16 on varsity. Why in the world would they have 25? It sounds like they are already trying to include more girls than they need.

SleightOfHand --- 10 years ago -

If NASCAR is a sport, cheerleading should be a sport

All I can think of is those crazy cheer moms. They go nuts after their kids. Pushing them beyond their limits. The mom just look absolutely nutso crazy.

And what proof do you have the faculty knew?

KPark is a very good school, what transpired between the Coach and that girl was not indicative of the quality of the high school

Hiro Protagonist --- 10 years ago -

It's not like it's clearly obvious in cheerleading who the best ones are. In a place like Kingwood, I'm sure all of them are capable of doing the gymnastic moves, so what's the skill that your kid has that makes them obviously varsity material?

Warren Peace --- 10 years ago -

I see your angle and agree. Basically, if out of shape middle aged men can participate and do well, it's not a sport. So I'm adding golf.

But I still don't understand how curling became an Olympic event. It's as if some ultra smart feminist discovered a way to get their husband to pick up a broom, and other morons followed. I can't watch this event without expecting Ashton Kutcher (Allen Funt for Bob/Emp) to come out for everyone to realize they've been had.

NASCAR is a mental illness.
