Are we great again yet --- 7 years ago -

Now's not the time to talk about it, right?

whatchamacallit --- 7 years ago -

Why not? Because we don't know much of anything, yet? Other than that some people, including a 2 year old, were shot and killed? Not really sure what you're getting at?

Praying for those poor people would be appropriate.

Are we great again yet --- 7 years ago -

You seem like an educated person. What is it that we ALWAYS cant talk about because now is not the right time and we never get to the right time?

FANCY PANTS --- 7 years ago -

Praying for those poor people would be appropriate.?

Yes, Prayer for the people of Sutherland Springs 1st Baptist Church is appropriate.

So, Praying for the injured, the dead, and their friends and family.

Are we great again yet --- 7 years ago -

Right. I'll be praying for those people and families . I'll pray to the same theoretical deity that they were in church praying to. That should help a lot.

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 7 years ago -

At least 20 people are feared dead in Texas after a gunman opened fire at a church outside San Antonio on Sunday, Fox News has learned.

The mass shooting was reported at First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs, which is about 30 miles southeast of San Antonio. The gunman has been fatally shot by police, Fox News has confirmed.
From Fox news-
Wilson County Commissioner Larry Wiley told Fox News that an emergency responder said between 20 and 24 people are dead, and around 20 were wounded when a man walked into the church about 11:30 a.m. on Sunday and opened fire at the crowd of people.

This from Fox News-

There will be ZERO tolerance for trolling on these threads dealing with human loss and mass murders.

This is an extremely small, rural area where everyone knows everyone and there are no secrets. I grew up in a town like that and this situation will tear this community apart.

My heart goes out to everyone living there. It's beyond tragic.

mutton --- 7 years ago -

OMG! How horrible. Thank you Saga for taking stand here! Prayers to all...

Are we great again yet --- 7 years ago -

How is it trolling? This is a thread I started to discuss why nothing is done to address the real problem. Praying is not doing anything to correct this MAJOR problem occurring in this counrty

mutton --- 7 years ago -

And being snarky truly helps...you may not believe in prayer, is your right. Many do, and is their right.

Dorothy Parker --- 7 years ago -

To the OP, nothing will ever change regarding gun violence in this country. If changes weren't made after Columbine, Sandy Hook and Vegas, they aren't ever gonna change.

This situation will be more of the same.

SagaciousSighFiGurl (Mod) --- 7 years ago -

IDK, this is the third mass killing in the last month. Maybe these stats are the SHOOTINGS only. But we have bombings, trucks running over people and other "weapons" like bombs.

Three this last month...

You know why. Because peoples faiths are very personal and sensitive, and WHY you say what you do. You've been warned. Do not insult people with your inflammatory, unrelated comments.

Like the deterioration of the American family? The deterioration of social mores?

Just maybe if more people and families spent more time praying together, our nation would produce less mentally ill and emotionally disturbed peopled.

Emperor of Kingwood --- 7 years ago -

Because guns aren't the problem, violence is.

Dorothy Parker --- 7 years ago -

27 people just died in a church, Emp, in a small town of 600 people. Odds are, every person in that congregation knew the shooter. This is not about being more religious. It's about living in a fear culture where people believe more guns are the answer and situations like these are just collateral damage for the right to bear arms.

It's the new norm.

Emperor of Kingwood --- 7 years ago -

Its not about fear of guns, its about fear of violence. Maybe if more families spent more time praying together instead of buying kids the most vile and disgusting video games that glorify violence as fun, thing would be different. Maybe if more families spent more time at the dinner table than watching the garbage put out by Hollywood, then thing would be different. Maybe if we didn't freak out when a teenage boy touches a girls breast but say nothing as he blows someones head off on screen, things would be different.

Dorothy Parker --- 7 years ago -

I never said it was fear of guns, I said a fear culture. We're afraid to answer the door without being locked and loaded. People have guns in their car or on their person at all times. Kids are not allowed to play outside because of the fear of kidnappers or sex offenders or bullies, etc. We live in fear of sexual harassment or being attacked just going to the store or for a walk. We would rather call the police or the HOA than actually speak with our neighbors....for fear of their reaction.

We live in constant fear of everyday life, unlike any generation before us.

That fear and paranoia is creating the monsters that commit mass shootings.

I agree with you in that we demonize the naked body and glorify violence. We are more connected to our devices than our friends and family. All of these factors are attributing to these horrible acts.

THANK YOU!!!

Emperor of Kingwood --- 7 years ago -

I fully agree. With DPs post.

Dorothy Parker --- 7 years ago -

Glad you agree, Emp!

How do we fix the fear culture we have created?

mutton --- 7 years ago -

I also agree dp!

SagaciousSighFiGurl (Mod) --- 7 years ago -

I agree too, that we are moving in ways that aren't healthy as a society and this generation of youth has a different normal. But, the people who do these kinds of things are 1) Evil or 2) mentally deficient/deranged. And it's possible that all our moves away from true connections and away from real connections aren't why they do what they do.

That's not to say that a culture that glamorizes violence doesn't affect some people. It's possible this is hardening the hearts of people. And can't be good for children. Yet the vast majority would never do this.

How do we fix the fear culture we have created?

I have to admit I'm stumped on that. Maybe find ways to stop making violence a game of entertainment. Although, i can remember playing cowboys and Indians with toy guns. We shot each other and used our imagination on how to act when shot. Now, no imagination is required. I'm not so sure young minds are able to process the difference between whats on the screen and reality.

I was in elementary school in the early 60s. If i were in elementary school today, I'd be the kid that's medicated. Maybe there's something there about how schools relate to our kids.

Reduction of or better stress related coping skills might be useful along with de-stigmatizing mental illness.

SagaciousSighFiGurl (Mod) --- 7 years ago -

DP, I think the media is the greatest fear monger of all. After reporting the facts, they should STOP with the 24/7 coverage and all the what ifs and speculation that just does no good.

We are a free society so they never will stop bc of ratings and money. People won't stop glamorizing unhealthy things bc of freedom and selfish pursuits. Therefore it's totally up to us as individuals and parents acting for their children to take action. Kids don't need cell phones and unbridled Internet use at 11 years old.

Sharticus --- 7 years ago -

This is the perfect post to follow up last weeks terrorists attacks. Now you get to ban guns again after failing miserably to provide a solution last week. Look at who all came out today!

idontplaynice --- 7 years ago -

Some reports state the shooter Devin Kelley was dishonorably discharged from the Air Force, which means he was prohibted from buying a firearm in the first place.

I have also heard the shooter was engaged by neighbor of the church with his own gun.

smartypants --- 7 years ago -

People won't stop glamorizing unhealthy things bc of freedom and selfish pursuits.

Unhealthy things bc of freedom, in this case: semi automatic weapons

20 people killed in 15 seconds.

Prayers ring hollow when there's a system in place to make these types of weapons illegal, our legislators continue to do nothing, and our electorate endorses the do nothings. It wouldn't stop crazy...they need health care for that...but it would be a start.

Emperor of Kingwood --- 7 years ago -

but it would be a start.

Its the wrong start. Weapons capable of rapid rates of fire have been available since 1863. How many of these types of incidents with semi automatics occurred in the 1950's?

So whats changed? Gun laws are strengthened. From a societal POV what has changed?

smartypants --- 7 years ago -

How many of these types of incidents with semi automatics occurred in the 1950's?

How many have occurred in Japan since ownership of weapons is severely restricted? 4? 2?

Continuing to think the problem will be solved by doing the same thing (i e nothing) is the definition of stupid.

And unlike in the 1950's, we do have a problem. Today.

Emperor of Kingwood --- 7 years ago -

The definition of stupid is to blame an inanimate object for the acts of humans.

Emperor of Kingwood --- 7 years ago -

Do you know how different the Japanese family and culture is different from ours?

smartypants --- 7 years ago -

I don't think we can make humans illegal. Might have to try something else.

Do you know how different the Japanese family and culture is different from ours??

Probably their gun culture is non existent. Yep. Big difference.

Saturn --- 7 years ago -

How about we take a couple of days and mourn those who lost their lives to this mad man and pray for them and their families, instead of getting into a gun rights argument.

Emperor of Kingwood --- 7 years ago -

Might have to try something else.

Like addressing a culture of violence?

smartypants --- 7 years ago -

Like addressing a culture of violence??

So I get that you don't want to make owning these mass killing weapons illegal. Let's see, the guy got very comfortable with weapons in the military. So perhaps we shouldn't be so gung ho about going to senseless endless wars because of our own misguided reasoning? Maybe we shouldn't be increasing our offense budget (some call it defense). Want to start at any of those places? I'm just asking because I don't know if banning paint ball is going to make a dent.

Sharticus --- 7 years ago -

I want to ban Chik-Fil-A. Why? because fast food kills millions of people each year and I personally can't understand why people love that crap. So there is only one option. Ban it. Sorry to the 5000 Kingwood moms that depend on Chik Fil A instead of cooking healthy meals for their kids. Fast food is a killer. Got to ban it.
